The thesis critically examines the growth of utilitarian ethics and how it became more systematic. It discusses Bentham’s hedonic calculus, Mill’s distinction between higher and lower pleasures, and Sidgwick’s systematic approach to utilitarianism. It assesses the strengths and weaknesses of classical utilitarianism on justice, human rights and future effects, shows how each thinker tried to improve the theory, and considers the usefulness of utilitarianism for modern moral issues and policy decisions.
