Sanitation Project in Rural Tamilnadu
The Engineers without Borders Team comprising of students from SRM University are actively involved in Design, Cost Estimation and construction of toilets in the village. This is aimed at creating awareness on personal hygiene and communicable disease control due to improper sanitation practices. The initial campaign involved covering villages in the outskirts of Northern Chennai with greater emphasis on localities that have reported sanitation issues.
ENRAPT
Environment Replenishment by Active Participation and Training (ENRAPT) is a brain child of Dr.Paromita Chakraborty, Head of Environmental Science and Technology research group in SRM University. The group usually consists of Ph.D scholars, M.Tech and B.Tech students from Environmental Engineering Department and student volunteers. The group works on plans and strategies to promote best environmental practices with regard to community hygiene and solid waste management. Course of action involves community outreach around SRM University and creating awareness on waste segregation, domestic composting etc. Drawing on the lines of Swach Bharat Mission, the programs are co-ordinated around fisrt week of October with special ceremony on October 2, the Gandhi Jayanti (Birthday of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi)
2014
The Team organised practical training session on domestic composting for students of Class 8 from Sivanad Saraswathi Matric School, Kattankulathur. An interactive power point presentation session was followed by hands on training for students on segregation of bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste and preparation and maintenance of domestic composting pit.
2015
The Team split into several groups addressed the local community on the issues of sanitation around the residential area in Kattankulathur and Potheri. A questionnaire based interaction was followed by awareness campaign that emphasised on septic tank and soak pit usage, waste segregation, child health and mosquito breeding prevention steps. The questionnaire involved measuring the interest of the locality in carrying out the domestic composting. The team also performed awareness street plays by gathering the crowd in a public place promoting the importance of the campaign.
2016
The Team joined hands with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) group’s volunteers of SRM University to initiate the domestic composting process. The volunteers dug the pits and segregated waste from the residences and dumped. The volunteers held posters and placards exemplifying the benefits of domestic composting
