Dance Class Syllabus and Acknowledgment Form 

WELCOME TO THE NORTH SHORE SENIOR HIGH DANCE DEPARTMENT!

This syllabus has been modified according to expectation and guidelines.

This syllabus will be utilized throughout the year and will be subject to change as the year progresses.

You are receiving this syllabus acknowledgment form in hopes to make you more aware of the course guidelines and expectations of the dance department. Please read through the following information and sign off that you agree/understand the expectations of our dance department.

Course Supplies: While in Dance 1 class, students will be required to bring a designated spiral notebook of any color that will be used only for dance class. Students will also be responsible for wearing dance class attire on designated dance class days in order to physically demonstrate various skills, techniques, and combinations. Dance attire must be black in color and school appropriate.  No workout attire can be vulgar, offensive, or promote violence. Clothing must be comfortable to dance in and be made for athletic movement. Dressing out will count as a grade every class period and even if a student does not dress out, they are still responsible for participating in all class activities. 

Course Calendar: NSSH is on a block schedule for the 2022-2023 school year. Class periods 1 – 4 will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and some Fridays. Class periods 5-8 will meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Fridays. On your designated dance class day, students will be required for wearing all black dance class attire.

Course Expectations:  Students are expected to dress out and participate each and every time we meet as a class. If a student needs to sit out for any reason, they must submit a doctor’s note and/or parent note. Any doctor’s note and/ or parent note should be submitted by email with student name and period by the next scheduled class period. All students must take notes during any lesson and are responsible for all information discussed during the scheduled class period. Any additional information or resources will be found in the Google Classroom portion of this syllabus for student reference.  

Dance Class Attire: Workout Attire Tops –All black tops/t-shirts, no spaghetti straps, no crop tops, no mid-drift showing.

Workout Attire Bottoms – All black bottoms, leggings (no – see through tights), basketball shorts, no cheer shorts, and no jeans of any kind.

Dance Shoes – Dance shoes are optional if you have them. If you do not own any dance shoes, please wear tennis shoes that are suitable for movement. Please take into consideration the type of flooring you will be moving on and plan accordingly. Nike socks are also accepted due to the flooring that students will be dancing on. 

Other expectations for the course:

·         Hair Pulled Back out of Face/Using a Hair Tie

·         No Jewelry

·         No Street Shoes (this includes sandals)/ Only athletic shoes allowed

·         No Gum

·         Cameras must be visible throughout the entire time of instruction

·         Videos must remain on mute during instruction unless instructed otherwise

·         Ensure you remain on task throughout virtual learning

All assignments will be accessible utilizing Google Classroom and parents are able to monitor their individual students progression in the course.  

Students enroll in our Google Classroom

All of your assignments will be posted on Google Classroom throughout the year for Dance. 

Google Classroom is where you will find all of your required work along with instructions and due dates. 

Google Classroom codes are organized by class period. Please find your class period and utilize that specific code to enroll in the appropriate section.

Content that will be covered in Dance Class. 

Introduction to Dance Review 

We will begin the Spring Semester by reviewing the Introduction to Dance technique and skills from the previous semester. 

Warm-Up and Stretching Review 

It is very important for each dancer to effectively Warm-Up and Stretch in order to avoid injury and to progressively improve your ability for technique. 

Dance Around the World  

This semester we will be looking at Dance Around the World and how dance is utilized in various countries. We will be looking at costumes, movement aspects, and other elements involved in how other locations utilize dance in their society. 

Set personal goals for Dance this year 

Why do you dance? 

Think about the reason that you enjoy dance and some goals that you plan on accomplishing this year. 

I dance in order to express myself and to create a piece of visual art that makes other people happy. My goals this year are staying safe, happy, and healthy.
