UNIVERSITY OF DELHI, H-BLOCK, KALKAJI, NEW DELHI- 110019
The National Service Scheme, or NSS, was founded in 1969, during Gandhiji's centennial year which is an Indian government-sponsored flagship public service initiative currently administered by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is a charitable group of young people that aims to build students' personalities through community service so as to instill in them a sense of social responsibility to serve society without prejudice. NSS volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that anyone in need receives assistance so as to live a dignified life. India is the nodal authority at the national level, and it collaborates with state-level NSS cells. The state governments are in charge of the NSS cells at the state level. Within each state, each university has an NSS cell that oversees institutions (schools and colleges) based NSS units. Volunteers of NSS unit are present in almost all government and government-aided institutions. A typical unit consists of 50-60 students. Internally, they are supervised by a responsible party from the school or college, who reports to the principal. NSS activities involve Regular Activities (120 hours) and Annual Special Camp (120 hours). The volunteers who manage to work with NSS for at least 2 years and have completed 240 hours of service are eligible to earn a certificate from the University for their indulgence with the Unit. The NSS Unit Deshbandhu College organises from time to time various activities and events to keep the volunteers active. These events include Raising Awareness for various social issues, Cleanliness Drives, Community Services, Diwali Mela, Annual Fest and so on. We look forward to hold many such events to create awareness in the society and help each and every person in need

In our country, menstruation continues to be surrounded by stigma, discrimination, and shame. Despite being a natural biological process, conversations around menstrual and sexual health are often silenced or spoken of in hushed tones. This culture of secrecy and embarrassment not only perpetuates ignorance but also adversely affects the health, dignity, and confidence of women and girls. To challenge these deep-rooted taboos, a dedicated team of 20 female volunteers from the NSS Unit undertook a meaningful outreach program at the Sudhaar Camp. Their mission was to raise awareness about menstruation and sexual health, fostering open dialogue and empowering women with knowledge.
The team engaged with young girls, mothers, and elderly women, initiating honest conversations on a topic that is rarely discussed in public spaces. A powerful and relatable skit was performed by the volunteers, depicting the experience of a young girl getting her first period and highlighting the societal reactions, fears, and misconceptions she faces. The skit catalyzed discussion, encouraging women to share their experiences and thoughts and helping break the silence surrounding menstruation.
Following the performance, the volunteers launched a door-to-door awareness campaign. They visited each household in the camp, discussing critical topics such as menstrual hygiene, early signs of reproductive health issues, and practical steps for maintaining good menstrual and sexual health. Each household was given a small hamper containing Jan-Aushadhi sanitary pads and informative pamphlets. These pamphlets not only provided essential health information but also listed nearby doctors and pharmacies, offering a practical resource for the community
