Yingjie Hu (PI) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University at Buffalo (UB) and the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA). His major research area is in geographic information science (GIScience) and GeoAI. He and his team have worked extensively on understanding and extracting location descriptions from disaster-related social media messages.
Kenneth Joseph (Co-PI) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University at Buffalo. He studies how biases emerge from complex sociotechnical systems. He has rich experience working with Twitter data on topics related to algorithmic bias, misinformation, and other social issues, as well as their interrelationships with sociocultural structure and behavior.
GeoCove Inc. is a GIS company with expertise in disaster management. Geocove provides GIS solutions to government agencies and businesses. Their products include the ARM360 damage assessment system and COVID-19 crisis management tools. Their clients range across multiple states in the US, including the Town of Tonawanda (New York), Sussex County (Delaware), Onslow County (North Carolina), and Miami-Dade County (Florida).
Kai Sun is a Postdoc Associate for this project. Previously, he was a visiting PhD student in the GeoAI Lab from 2019 to 2021. He obtained his B.S. from Wuhan University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His role in this project is to develop GeoAI methods and tools for disaster management.
Gaurish Lakhanpal is a high school student at Stevenson High School (graduating in 2023). He works as a research intern in the GeoAI Lab. He’s interested in exploring the world of GeoAI, specifically looking into how spatial bias may exist in social media data. In his free time he enjoys programming, writing poetry, and collecting fountain pens.
Voltaire Vergara works as an undergraduate research assistant for this project. He earned a B.S. in computer science from UB, but he has always been enthusiastic about spatial analysis. He intends to use his computer science skills for geographical applications in order to address societal issues.
Wei Liu is a master student in the Department of Geography, University at Buffalo. She is interested in using spatial analysis and GeoAI to address the problems related social inequity. She is passionate about serving the general public using her GIS skills and spatial knowledge.
