Background and Objectives

The explosion of data that are derived from numerous sources (technology studies, business/industry transactions, social media, environmental and health monitoring, energy studies, educational interventions, game and other entertainment industries, and other areas) is impacting research, design, manufacturing, marketing, and many workplace practices. Colleges and universities, working in close collaboration with industries, need to better prepare undergraduate students-regardless of major field-to gather, analyze and use data effectively to improve processes.

The Department of Technology and Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at Stony Brook University (SBU) is pleased to host a national workshop entitled “Data Science Across the Undergraduate Curriculum: University-Industry Online Case Studies on Applications of Data Science.”

The workshop has two major objectives:

• Review the national landscape on major online resources for the learning and teaching of data science across the undergraduate curriculum.
• Lay out initial plans for developing frameworks for doing curricular design, facilitating learning environments, and doing assessments in the context of online case studies on applications of data science.

The workshop will lay the foundation for university-industry collaboration on developing and disseminating case studies on data science.

Getting Here

By Car

From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790."

Stony Brook Administration Parking Garage is right cross the street of Charles B. Wang Center.

By Train

Take the Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines.

By Ferry

Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to.

From New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island, take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.

By Plane

Long Island's Islip-MacArthur Airport is 16 miles from the campus and is serviced by direct flights by major airlines and commuter lines. It is most easily accessible by car (rental counters are available at the airport). You can also take the Suffolk County Bus S57 (schedule) to the Smith Haven Mall (final stop). There you can transfer to the S60 (schedule), where you will get off at the University Administration Building, or the 3D (schedule), where you will get off at the University Student Union.

• Driving directions to Stony Brook University from Islip-MacArthur Airport: Exit the airport and turn left onto Veterans Memorial Highway (Route 454 West). Merge onto Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and take the second exit onto Nicolls Road. Drive north for 12 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left.

New York City Area Airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark) are approximately 50 miles to the west.

• From JFK Airport, you can take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and transfer to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for the train to Stony Brook (take the Port Jefferson line).
• From LaGuardia Airport, you can take a taxi to the closest Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station: the Woodside train station. From Woodside, you may take the LIRR to Stony Brook by transferring at the Jamaica train station.
• From Newark Airport, you can buy a combined New Jersey Transit/AirTrain ticket to Pennsylvania Station (Penn Station) in New York City. You can buy it and display on your iPhone or Android phone with the MyTix app. You first take the AirTrain, which will take you to the Newark Airport Train Station, then you will take the New Jersey Transit train. The train ride from Newark Airport Train station to Pennsylvania Station takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. From Pennsylvania Station you can take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Stony Brook.
