Nova Rylee Johnson is a storyteller with a background in social media, public speaking, journalism, and filmmaking. Her love for words began with poetry and performance as the captain of her high school Speech & Acting team. In her senior year, she started a YouTube channel documenting the honest reality of an ambitious teenager, using social media to practice her video editing and digital engagement skills.
Now a rising senior at Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications, Nova studies Media, Journalism, and Film with a focus in Film and Television Production. Over time, her interests in digital storytelling, performance, and writing aided her passion for screenwriting and television development, especially stories centered on Black life, the female identity, humor, and culture.
In 2025, Nova studied abroad at American University of Rome, where she learned filmmaking through the perspective of European cinema and entertainment. She has continued expanding her industry experience through opportunities like serving as an Inclusive Content Intern at Lionsgate, participating in the 2025 HBCU in LA Writers Workshop, and working as a Head Writer for Howard Night Live!, a live comedy show on campus during her junior year.
Now, Nova continues to expand her worldview and abilities across mediums. Whether through film, comedy, poetry, or digital media, Nova is passionate about telling honest stories that connect communities and support a more empathetic society.
