The Melattur style of Bharatanatyam originated in the village of Melattur, also in Tamil Nadu. It has a more recent history and is associated with the devadasi tradition, which involves temple dancers. 

Dancers in the Thanjavur style typically wear elaborate costumes and heavy jewelry, including large headpieces, necklaces, and multiple bangles. The costumes are characterized by intricate designs and vibrant colors.

The Melattur style generally has simpler costumes and jewelry, with a focus on traditional attire that may be less ornate compared to the Thanjavur style. 

The repertoire of the Thanjavur style includes a wide range of traditional Bharatanatyam pieces, including invocatory items, varnams, padams, and more.

The Melattur style often includes compositions specific to its lineage and is associated with the Melattur Bhagavata Mela tradition, which incorporates storytelling elements from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics.
