A Tender Moment
Maker: Lynn Padwee
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska
This trip, to a remote part of Alaska, was a true bucket list experience. Having always wanted to photograph coastal brown bears up close, I was thrilled when I caught a mother bear rolling over to nurse her cubs on the beach--my favorite photo from the entire trip.

Close Encounter of the First Kind
Maker: Lynn Padwee
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska
While we were photographing some coastal brown bears eating sedges, a massive, lone bear entered the area to feed. She came so close that I was completely mesmerized by her size and beauty, barely able to take the shot! It was such an exhilarating experience.

The Art of Bear Fishing
Maker: Lynn Padwee
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska
Fishing styles are often learned behaviors. Many bears use the same techniques as their mother, plus others that they learn on their own. Some bears have mastered many styles, while other bears stick with the one that works. This coastal brown bear is using the "dash and grab tactic. I watched her charge through the shallow water of the Cook Inlet, chasing down a salmon, and pinning it to the river bottom with her paws. .

Osprey with Three Fish Catch
Maker: Lynn Padwee
Central NJ
I have been told that photographing an osprey catching three fish in one strike is a rare event and a true highlight for any nature photographer. This photograph is a testament to the specialized, highly evolved, and thrilling hunting skills of the osprey captured just after it emerged from the water with its incredible catch!.

Waiting Patiently
Maker: Lynn Padwee
Central NJ
As I got out of my car, I noticed the small birds were taking refuge in the pine branches. Then I spotted this juvenile Cooper's Hawk perched patiently on the tree branch, watching them and waiting patiently for an opportunity to grab a snack. I was able to capture the hawk before it noticed me and flew off empty- taloned!

Winter Visitor

Island Beach State Park, NJ
Seeing a Snowy Owl was at the top of my friend Janet’s bucket list, so when I planned a trip to photograph one, I knew she had to come along. After a challenging two-mile trek through the sand, we finally found this magnificent bird. It was the perfect day—I got my shot, and she got to cross a major item off her bucket list. I gave her this photo as a reminder of the wonderful experience we shared.
