Waybound
Waybound
Waybound is a 3D exploration game that follows Nellie, a Red Panda who has fallen victim to illegal poachers in an industrialised, monochromatic city.
Players take control of Nellie after a recent escape from her captors and play as she attempts to follow her unique sense of smell back to her mother and the forest.
We intend to have the game focused on its deep, emotional storytelling, unique mechanics, and cinematic art style.
Waybound will be built within Unreal Engine 5 as it allows for rapid prototyping of mechanics, and the ability to create optimised, immersive environments.
As of now, Waybound is officially in development -- and is a playable prototype.

Social, Cultural, and Ethical Considerations.
Something we really want to emphasise, is certain ethical and cultural considerations regarding our game's depiction of Red Pandas; a species native to the Himalayas and South-Western China. We really want to ensure the character isn't just a 'cute mascot,' but a representation that balances the potential for education and conservation against risks of normalisation of harm, and misinformation. This aligns a lot with our goal of creating an 'avant-garde' work that is socially conscious and ethically informed.Â

We want to have Waybound emulate immersive, explorable environments that tell a story without having to say any words. Additionally, as the game is rooted in themes of family and environmentalism, our monochromatic colour pallet really aims to emphasise what is most important.

Overall, Waybound's dev team is comprised of 2 programmers, 5 artists, and a narrative designer. We have gotten to know each other quite well, and we really enjoy working together. We're all extremely passionate and excited about this game and really want to have it succeed.
