Yilina, renowned vocalist from Mongolia, is coming back to Seattle for the first time since 2018, when she headlined a benefit concert for recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake—this time leading a new group of performers for a new event. 

On Sun. 3/30, you can enjoy their talents at a benefit concert at UW School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium, this time for those affected by the 2024 earthquake on the Noto Peninsula.

Titled “Harmony across Cultures,” the wide-ranging program will feature Mongolian and Japanese folk songs, a performance on the shakuhachi flute, songs from local Japanese choirs, kagura ceremonial dance, traditional Japanese dance, and more. Before the curtains go up, you can experience the sound of Japanese koto, an introduction to tea ceremony, and a panel with updated information about the situation on the Noto Peninsula, all in the lobby.

Entrance is free. The Ishikawa Kenjin-Kai of Seattle will collect donations to a scholarship fund for students affected by the Noto Earthquake.

2018年東日本大震災の支援イベントに出演したモンゴルの歌姫イリナさんが、日本の伝統音楽グループを率いて、再びシアトルを訪問。3月30日（日）にワシントン大学音楽学部のBrechemin Auditoriumで、2024年に発生した能登半島地震の支援イベントを行います。

『HARMONY across CULTURES』と題し、モンゴルと日本の民謡、尺八の演奏、シアトルの日本語合唱コミュニティの歌、神楽、日本舞踊など、多様なプログラムです。開演前のロビーでは、箏の演奏と茶道の紹介、能登半島地震の現状を伝えるパネルを展示します。

入場無料。シアトル石川県人会による被災学生への奨学金基金にご寄付ください。

伝統的な古典曲から、ジャズ、ラテン、ポップス、アニメソングや現代音楽 まで、多彩なジャンルの演奏と幅広い表現力、演奏技術が高い評価を受けて いる。

Sound Singers is a mixed choir founded in 2009.
Our mission is to build friendship and share Japanese culture with people from all backgrounds primarily through Japanese music.
Since its inception, Sound Singers has been performing at various local cultural-related events, such as the Japan Fair and the Hiroshima memorial event (From Hiroshima to Hope) as well as visiting and performing at local nursing homes. Sound Singers typically holds an annual concert in November each year.

The Evergreen Glee Club was formed in 2006 by six Japanese business executives who loved singing in a chorus group. It is a friendly group which principally gathered to enjoy singing but also provided an opportunity for personal friendship and comaraderie. We welcome anyone who enjoys singing, with some basic musical ability and a moderate comprehension of Japanese. We sing primarily 4-part Japanese songs but sometimes songs in English and other languages with piano accompaniment as well as in a capella. We regularly perform at a variety of community events as well as our own concerts for friends and family.

Rehearsals are held on two Sunday afternoons a month at the Japanese Baptist Church in Seattle.

Fumi Tagata, conducting & soprano

After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts, soprano Fumi Tagata came to Washington State in 1998 to expand her musical experiences and repertoire.  Since then, she has performed at various venues in the Greater Seattle area, as well as at local events such as Mariners' games and official functions at the Consulate General of Japan and the Washington State Office of the Governor. Besides her own performances, Fumi is a voice trainer, the director of three choirs, and also a founder of the Songs of Hope, a Seattle-based group of musicians who gathered to support children in Fukushima affected by the nuclear accidents following the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

田形ふみ　合唱指揮、ソプラノ　

東京藝術大学卒業後、1998年ワシントン大学大学院留学のため渡米。リサイタル、オペラ等の演奏活動の傍ら、シアトルマリナーズ開会式でのアメリカ国歌斉唱や、ワシントン州知事公邸、在シアトル日本国総領事公邸での演奏など、コミュニティイベントにも数多く招待される。2011年の東日本大震災を機に設立された、復興支援のための音楽グループ「Songs of Hope」発起人。2012年よりシアトル地域で活動する複数の合唱団の指導にあたる。

Ayase Saxman, piano

Born in Osaka, Japan. At 18 years old, Ayase moved to the United States and studied piano and music therapy at Michigan State University. Since her school days, she has been active as pianist and accompanist and often participated in recitals and competitions with various instrumentalists and vocalists. After graduating, for 10 years she worked as a music therapist (MT-BC) and music educator for toddlers. After she moved to Washington State, she began working as a piano teacher, eurhythmy accompanist at a Waldorf school, and accompanist for a Japanese women's choir group (Echo Chorus). 

あやせ　サックスマン　ピアノ

ミシガン州立大学音楽学部卒業。大阪に生まれ５歳からピアノを学ぶ。高校卒業後渡米。演奏学科で学んでいたが、大学2年の終わりに音楽療法に出会う。それが音楽の持つ可能性を芸術、科学、心理、哲学など多面から理解を深めるきっかけとなり、その後の自身の音楽教育とピアノ演奏に大きな影響を与えてくれた。学生の頃からピアニスト、伴奏者として様々な楽器奏者や声楽家と共にリサイタルやコンクール、コミュニティイベントなどで積極的に活動。卒業後は全米認定音楽療法士(MT-BC)と幼児音楽教育講師として１０年勤め、ワシントン州に移住した現在は主にピアノ講師、シュタイナー学校でのオイリュトミー伴奏、そしてイーストサイド日系女性合唱団（エコーコーラス）の伴奏を務める。

After graduating from Musashino Academia Musicae, Department of Music Education, Piano Major, Mime went to the United States and graduated from Cornish College of the Arts, Department of Music, Piano Major. She studied under Professor Peter Mack and Mr. Mark Salman. Besides working for the Megumi Preschool, she is currently active as an accompanist for the men's choir Evergreen Glee Club, the women's choir Cabin Choir, and "Songs of Hope", which was launched to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

武蔵野音楽大学音楽教育学科ピアノ専攻を卒業。その後渡米し、シアトルにあるコーニッシュ芸術大学音楽科ピアノ専攻を卒業。Peter Mack教授、Mark Salman氏に師事。現在、めぐみ保育園勤務の傍ら、男声合唱団Evergreen Glee Club、女声合唱団Cabin Choir、及び、東日本大震災復興支援のために立ち上げられた「Songs of Hope」で伴奏ピアニストとして活躍中。

Lisa Maria d'Aquila, MC

Lisa has been teaching piano and accompanying in the Puget Sound region for over thirty years. She is also a co-founder of Songs of Hope, a group of musicians in the Seattle area who started fundraising and benefit events to support victims and families who were affected by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 in Japan.  Additionally, for the last 20 years, she has been lead presenter for “Japan In the Schools”, the signature program of the Japan America Society of the State of Washington. This program aims to introduce Japanese culture, history and language to elementary, middle and high school students anywhere in Washington State. Drawing on her own experiences as an exchange student in Japan, she is passionate about sharing Japanese traditions and values with young American students.

2024 Noto Earthquake Scholarship

The Ishikawa Kenjin-Kai of Seattle

On January 1st 2024, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. A tsunami warning sounded across the western coasts of Japan, and the tsunami that followed hit the Noto Peninsula soon after. The tsunami damaged approximately 400 acres of the Noto peninsula. Power and water supplies were cut, communications were disrupted. Since then, more than 1,500 aftershocks have followed. The quake also caused fires in some cities; it is estimated that hundreds of houses were burnt down.

Thousands have been affected and some of them were forced to evacuate their home or city, staying wherever possible for the time being. The cleaning of debris and reconstruction has yet to begin, leaving millions feeling uncertain about their future.

This fundraising is particularly to provide financial aid to new or current college students affected by the disaster, so that they can focus on their study without worrying about their financials. Please help us keep a light of hope for the region's sustainability in the long term.

2024年元日に発生した能登半島地震の被災者支援のため募金にご協力ください。ここで集めた資金は、被災した現役大学生および新入生を対象とした給付型奨学金として活用したく、日本側で枠組み作りを進めています。

なぜ奨学金なのか？日々被災地の状況を見ながら、遠く離れた地からどう支援すべきかを考えました。結果、すでに複数の支援団体が動いてるような短期的なニーズに応えるのではなく、中長期的な視点で能登の未来を担う人材を重点的に支援することが、復興に向けた希望になるという結論に至りました。対象者が限られることから賛否両論であることは承知のうえで、ご理解ご賛同頂ける方には、ぜひ募金のご協力をお願い致します。

<経過報告> これまで当会から12000ドルを提携先の岩城留学生奨学会に寄付し、2024年4月に選考を通った13人の大学生・専門学生へ給付された奨学金の一部として活用させて頂きました。引き続き、2025年度の給付に向けて募金活動を継続中です。

Brechemin Auditorium is on the east end of the School of Music’s main floor in the Music Building.
The building is located on The Quad, a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot at UW. The cherry blossoms will likely be in full bloom on the 30th, allowing you to enjoy both the blossoms and traditional Japanese culture.

If the weather is good, the parking lot may be crowded with cherry blossom visitors. Please arrive early and use the free parking lot on campus, or take public transportation. The light rail station (U District Station) is a 10-minute walk away, and the nearest bus stop (15th Ave NE & NE 43rd St) is a 9-minute walk. We recommend parking at a transit center with free parking and taking the light rail or bus to avoid congestion.
