At the end of life, families are often faced with overwhelming decisions, unfamiliar medical language, differing beliefs, and emotional conversations that many of us have never been taught how to navigate. As a society, we tend to avoid open discussions about death and dying, leaving loved ones uncertain about wishes, priorities, and next steps during one of life’s most vulnerable seasons.
An end-of-life Doula provides calm, objective, and compassionate support for individuals and their circle of care throughout the dying process. By creating space for meaningful conversations, thoughtful planning, and clear communication, a doula helps reduce confusion, ease emotional burdens, and ensure that a person’s values and final wishes are understood and honoured.

For more than 30 years, Kate LaBranche has supported individuals and families through times of transition, first in education and now in end of life companioning. Her work has always centered around listening deeply, creating space for honest conversation, and helping people navigate complex emotions with compassion and care.
With her recently earned Palliative Care Certificate from Durham College in hand and three years of volunteering with Hospice Peterborough, Kate created Nothing Left Unspoken, a practice devoted to helping people live fully and prepare thoughtfully for the end of life through open dialogue, advance care planning, and meaningful connection.

There are many different variations of an end-of-life Doula so it is important to understand what support you are seeking and ask the right questions when looking for right fit.
At Nothing Left Unspoken, the focus looks at supporting the client with their end of life through companionship. If time allows, focussing on Advance Care Planning and any legacy projects that might be a priority.
Ideally, this support begins well before the final days. Advance planning can remove the guesswork for loved ones, bring clarity to decision-making if someone becomes unable to speak for themselves, and help everyone involved feel more prepared, connected, and supported. Having someone walk alongside you during this profound transition is not only comforting, it is invaluable.
