Hey guys, since i started on linux there is one thing that i'm really missing, that is the function to add clickable links in Notepad++. I know i can just use Notepad++ trough wine but i would like to try a native solution. I already tried notepadqq, mousepad, kwrite and etc, but none of these seem to have that option. Please, let me know if you guys know about some notepad app with that functionality !

A lot of Linux users eventually migrate to Vim or Emacs. They have steep learning curves, but near-infinite customizability. For a more notepad++ like editor, I hear good things about geany, but am a vim user myself.

In my opinion the choice of an editor is a very personal matter. If I were you, I would look at this list and try them one by one until I found one that worked for me. If all else fails, I noticed on that list that notepad++ is reported to work well with wine.

Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, notepad-plus-plus is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, notepad-plus-plus is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

I'm not kidding. It does that. On a clean arch with gnome install, after I installed wine, opening text files really uses notepad.exe! That must be a practical joke of the wine developers, right? How can I fix this? I'm going to build my own wine package w/o notepad (just kidding. but why are they allowed to ship it in the first place?)

I will suggest you to install playonlinux. Playonlinux is a GUI front end to wine. You can choose install option from the toolbar or from file menu. Then you can click on install a unlisted program link given below.

If you are interested in learning vim, so as to be ready to use it or vi for those times when you need to, your best bet may be to install it on your windows system and start using it instead of notepad. There is lots to be learned, and if learn it you will be able to do things much faster than before.

I have once tried to build the source code for NPP on linux.... but the problem is the source code has some dependencies on windows platform... which i am unable to resolve. And the platform specific header files are also used so having trouble with the build. :(

NPP is a windows program and relies on the platform SDK. There is no point in trying to compile on linux. Porting to Linix would require rewriting the whole user interface and this clearly is a huge task. Wine is a windows emulator which runs under linux. Its purpse is to rune native windows programs under linux. If NPP runs under wine there will be no need to recompile, the native windows compile would work. It is simply a mater of runing wine with npp. This question would be better asked on a wine forum where there will be the expertise in wine use to help you.

Not true. It is possible to port these programs, it is just a lot of work. The interface might not work exactly the same, but thanks to wine most of these will (with enough coaxing) build and run on linux.

Well, waiting for notepadqq to compile only to find that it doesn't have plugin support was rather disappointing... And running notepad++ in wine is hardly deserving of (Linux) in the title... or something I'm going to do.

Oh well, it looked kinda handy. Nevermind then.

Every developer, editor or Administrator have their own priority to choose a specific IDE or text editor. It depends upon nature of work that what tool they will prefer. Sometimes a simple vim editor will be sufficient but in some cases more detailed and advanced tool is required. more the 100 text editors are available as free or open source, you can choose any one of them as an alternative of notepad++ editor.

If you want to do some source code editing on Windows without being connected to klaatu, a good, basic text editor that provides syntax highlighting and other features for C and dozens of other languages is notepad++ ( -plus-plus.org/). 2351a5e196
