Calling For Safety

Important Reminders

  • You should never store portable propane tanks in basements or inside your home.

  • When transporting small cylinders, properly transport propane tanks in an upright position, securing them to a stabilized position.

  • Propane should not be left in mixed temperature. Therefore, do not leave portable propane cylinders in cars or closed vehicles.

Learn Where Your Shut Off Valve Is On Your Propane Tank

(Watch the video below!)

A Look Under Your Propane Tank Dome

Although propane stores very safely, on rare occasion, damage or deterioration may create a leak. If a leak should occur, a spark could ignite it. If you suspect you may have a leak, shutting off your main propane supply at the tank will make the situation safer until help arrives. Take a moment now to learn the location of your shutoff valve and how it works.

Service Shut Off Valve: This is the valve that shuts off service to your propane tank. Simply turn this valve clockwise until the gas shuts off. This valve is located at the top of your tank and typically looks like the valve that is located on your grill cylinder.

Fixed Liquid Level Gauge: This gauge indicates the level of propane when it is at or over 80%. This gauge is also known as the “spitter," as it releases or "spits” liquid when it is filled to 80% or more.

Fill Valve: This is the point at which the hose from the delivery truck is attached to the tank for refueling.

Educate Yourself About Propane

Propane is flammable when mixed with air. It is a gas that is tasteless, odorless, and colorless. Propane vapor is heavier than air. This means that vapor will pool at the lowest point possible. It will pool along floors, basements, or crawl spaces.

Regulator Replacement

We recommend that you have your appliance connectors inspected and should replace if they are 20 years old. They may still be in working condition, however, certain older appliance connectors may crack or break, causing a leak to your propane system. It is always better to be proactive when it comes to safety with propane.

You Should Call To Place Your Order When The Gauge Reads 25-30%.

If you are entirely out of propane, you run the risk of air and moisture building up in your tank. Air and moisture may cause your tank to rust on the inside of your tank, which may sku the smell of any actual leak on your propane tank. To be 100 % safe, you should never run out of propane.

What To Do If You Smell Gas

  1. Don't use any switches or try to use your land line phones.

  2. Extinguish ALL flames and smoking materials right away.

  3. Shut off the propane supply at the tank ( if it is safe to do so), by turning the valve clockwise.

  4. Take your family to a safe location far away from the leak.

  5. Call Northwoods Propane or your fire department.

  6. Stay away from your home until the leak has been fixed.
