Scope 3 Emissions
Scope 3 emissions cover indirect emissions from the activities of an organization that originate from sources that they neither own nor control. This includes fuel and energy related activities not included in Scope 1 or 2 like air travel and faculty/staff/student commuting. A more comprehensive inventory of scope 3 emissions would include waste generated in operation, as well as all purchased goods and services. This inventory has only addressed the emissions from travel not included under scope 1. This includes student/faculty commuting, school sponsored flights, and international student flights (to and from home). While detailed information is not available, it appears most colleges and universities do not include the latter in their reports, but, keeping with the precedent established in the first inventory, we include them here.
Food Related Emissions
Food related emissions were not included in the scope 3 total in this inventory. Their inclusion is not recommended, the data collection required for semi-accurate estimates is cost-prohibitive. During the 2018-19 school year:
12% of the dining hall budget was spent on organic food.
31% of spending was local (from Washington)
Of the meals served:
12% included beef ~40 metric tons CO2e from beef consumption*
11.5% included pork ~10 metric tons CO2e from pork consumption*
41% included poultry ~25 metric tons CO2e from poultry consumption*
6% included fish
29% were vegetarian, of which 13% were vegan
*see methodology page for assumptions made
Waste Emissions
Waste emissions were not included in this inventory as no data was available. This inventory was conducted remotely over the summer of 2021, so a trash audit was impossible. Recology, the waste management company that contracts with The Northwest School did not respond to requests for information. A waste audit including estimates of type and mass could provide an opportunity for reductions.
