This website is dedicated to the history of the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital in Northville, Michigan. Northville Psychiatric Hospital was a state run mental hospital located in Northville, Michigan at 41001 W Seven Mile Rd. It was in operation from 1952-2003. Here you find the history of Northville Psychiatric Hospital as while as many photos and links to videos. Other projects we are working include stories/interviews section and an online store. In the future we hope to create a virtual replica of the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital Buildings. Our goal is to preserve history for future generations.
The Future of Northville Psychiatric Hospital
The Future of Northville Psychiatric Hospital Will Go In Three Directions
1. Redevelopment:
The Northville Psychiatric Hospital Property is owned by Northville Township and will become Legacy Park.
The NE section of the property where the former staff houses were located is owned by REIS and is a mixed-use development called Northville Park Place.
The Former Hawthorn Center is still owned by the State of Michigan’s Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and will be redeveloped into a new psychiatric hospital facility. (See More Info in Section 2)
All remaining Northville Psychiatric Hospital buildings will be demolished
Building 14 the former Laundry Building will be kept and repurposed for use with Legacy Park.
Legacy Park will be developed in multiple phases.
The first phase includes trails in the eastern woods and the former train track.
Northville Township will construct a new water tower on the NW section of the property near former Building 72. (Completed in 2024)
Northville Township will build an Essential Services Complex. This will include a police & fire station, a public works complex, and a trailhead with restrooms. All of this is anticipated to be completed in 2025 and will be located near the former D, E, F, and G Buildings.
2. New Psychiatric Hospital in Northville
The former Hawthorn Center which was a psychiatric hospital for children & adolescents will be demolished and redeveloped into a new psychiatric hospital.
The new psychiatric hospital will be operated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and will serve adults, children and adolescents. Each will have their own space and living areas.
During this redevelopment the former Hawthorn Center patients will be located at Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital in Westland, MI
The new hospital is anticipated to be completed in 2026.
3. Former Northville Psychiatric Hospital Online Presence
Northville Psychiatric Hospital will have a website dedicated to the history of the hospital.
The website will include photos, videos, maps, historical information, an interview/story section, a website store with merchandise, and links to social media channels and other resources.Â
Northville Psychiatric Hospital will have a presence on social media. (Facebook Page, Facebook Group, Instagram, Twitter/X, Youtube)
A dedicated Wikipedia page will also be created for the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital. Which will include a section for former Hawthorn Center.
Virtual Replica Project: This project will include virtual replicas of the Northville Psychiatric Hospital buildings, water tower, roads, train track, & tunnels. It will also include the former staff houses on the NE section of the property and Hawthorn Center & The Hawthorn Center cottages. Users/Players will be able to explore the buildings and grounds. It will be single-player or multiplayer. The virtual replica will be able to be accessed from a platform. There will be a section with a link to the virtual replica included on the website.
