The mission of North Star Jiu-Jitsu is to provide private and semi-private lessons guided by the five elements of Jiu-Jitsu: standing self-defense, striking, clinching and throwing techniques, grappling, and philosophy.
At North Star, we recognize that Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with a low retention rate among new students, to combat this we provide our students with clearly stated goals, patience, and the programs to follow their North Star. Though we teach self-defense, North Star Jiu-Jitsu is a competitive school that encourages participation in tournaments.
We teach defenses against grabs and surprise attacks from an untrained opponent. We believe that these techniques are the root of the art that we practice and that they are vital.
Our students train striking techniques of all kinds in both the standing and grounded positions.
We teach and train our ability to put a person down to the ground. Takedowns are a crucial element of the art of Jiu Jitsu.
Newaza or ground work is the true specialty of our art and we train all aspects of the game on the ground.
We choose to promote the study of the code of the samurai as a part of Jiu Jitsu because it helps the student aim for excellence and it provides a standard for the culture of our team.
