The North Salem United Methodist Church had its earliest beginnings in 1828 in the White Lick circuit which then comprised the state of Indiana and part of Illinois. Joseph Tarkington, grandfather of Booth Tarkington, ministered to the pioneer families in their cabins. In 1833, Reuben Claypool, another early minister and resident of Eel River Township, organized his fellow neighbors into a formal class. A one-room log building was constructed a few years later on the corner of Main and Vine Streets.
In 1843, the Trustees purchased a long on Ladoga Avenue and built a one-room frame building. This second house of worship was used until shortly before the Civil War. The congregation had now outgrown the small one-room building and so the Trustees constructed a larger frame structure on the west side of North Main Street. The congregation worshipped there for several years.
By 1920, North Salem had grown to a population of 595 and, once again, the congregation required a larger church structure. On June 3, 1923, dedication was held for a newly constructed church located on West Pearl Street. This beautiful stone edifice, with its stained glass windows, was further enhanced with the donation of a pipe organ by E.M. "Pat" Murphy.
The congregation maintains a close and active relationship with the North Salem community. Several dinners and community church services are held throughout the years: we participate annually in 'Old Fashioned Days', collaborate with other churches in North Salem on community worship and an annual Easter Egg Hunt, and operate the best food pantry in the surrounding area.
Several generations of North Salem families have worshipped in this congregation over the years. A long line of ministers and church leaders have contributed to the strength and character of the current members. Throughout the history of our church, community, and nation, our faith has remained steadfast. Our commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the sharing of God's love to all in the community remains the foundation that grounds our ministry to future generations.
Our Leadership Team is a group of people who are diverse in their beliefs, their opinions, and their experiences but who are united by a love for Jesus and a desire to serve our community!
