As part of the Physiotherapeutic process we undertake a person-centred assessment which involves asking you for information about your pain or problem, your past medical history, drug history, social history and your aims from therapy. Then we observe movements and functional tasks that are troublesome. We provide advice, education and exercise therapy which is personalised to you. This can all be facilitated during a video call.
Is there any difference then to face-to-face appointments?
Yes. As part of the assessment, with consent, therapists will often move various joints (known as passive movement) and press on various areas of the body (known as palpation) in relation to your issue.
These are either to gain a measurement of the available range of movement at the joint(s) both actively (using conscious thought and your muscles) vs passive movement (when often less conscious thought and muscle activity is involved), or, to highlight which areas of the body hurt or are stiff or highly active (increased tone of the muscles). Sometimes what we call 'Special Tests' are also undertaken which are manoeuvres which can help to provide further information based on your issue. The information provided by these tests in isolation can be misleading.
Thera is no doubt that these component are challenging to include in an online meeting. However, there are ways to gain similar information. Asking and showing where to press on your body and asking you to feedback how it feels. Asking and showing you how to move joints where less muscle activity is being used to gain measurement of active vs passive movement. Undertake some of these 'Special Tests' yourself and feeding back how you feel alongside us observing you through the online video platform.
What online meeting Platforms do we use?
You will need an internet connection and webcam to undertake this form of consultation. Please note that a lot of computers and laptops have built-in webcams so please check your device accordingly.
