The Northern Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited (Chapter 434) brings together anglers, conservationists, and volunteers dedicated to protecting and restoring coldwater fisheries and their watersheds in West Virginia and the surrounding region.
Based in the Wheeling area, our chapter is part of a national community working to ensure that future generations can enjoy healthy streams, thriving trout populations, and the outdoor experiences that connect us to nature.
Our chapter combines hands-on conservation with education, fishing opportunities and community involvement. Our activities include:
Stream Conservation: Improving trout habitat, protecting water quality, planting trees along streams, and participating in stream cleanups.
Fishing & Outings: Bringing members together to fish, learn new skills, and explore the region's coldwater resources.
Youth & Community Education: Introducing young people and new anglers to fly fishing, aquatic conservation, and the natural world.
Volunteer Engagement: Working with local organizations, schools, and community partners to build a stronger conservation community.
The Northern Panhandle is home to a network of streams that support diverse aquatic life and provide valuable opportunities for fishing, recreation and conservation. Our chapter's local waters include Middle Wheeling Creek, Wheeling Creek, Buffalo Creek and Tomlinson Run.
These are primarily warmwater streams, managed to support a diversity of aquatic life, including smallmouth bass, hellbenders and other native species. Although trout are stocked during the winter and spring to provide seasonal fishing opportunities, the long-term health of these streams depends on protecting the entire aquatic ecosystem.
Middle Wheeling Creek
A designated delayed-harvest trout stream that provides seasonal fishing opportunities and supports a diverse warmwater aquatic ecosystem.
Wheeling Creek
A local watershed that supports warmwater fish populations and offers opportunities for fishing, recreation and stream conservation.
Buffalo Creek
A valued regional stream that provides seasonal trout fishing and habitat for native fish and other aquatic wildlife.
Tomlinson Run
An important local waterway where protecting water quality and healthy aquatic habitats helps sustain native wildlife and outdoor recreation.

Healthy trout streams are indicators of healthy watersheds. We work to protect these valuable resources through local conservation projects, partnerships and the involvement of our members and volunteers.
Whether you are an experienced angler, a beginning fly fisher, a student or simply someone who appreciates the outdoors, we welcome you to join us in protecting the waters we cherish.
