An Interstate Compact is an agreement between two or more states to work together on a common agenda. There are various interstate compacts in operation around the country already. While some compacts require congressional approval, those that are not in conflict with federal law do not.
During these unprecedented times, we have seen a federal government engage in acts once thought unthinkable or relegated to the realm of fiction. They have violated habeas corpus and have begun to apprehend and deport people without trial. They are illegally withholding taxpayer money from the states, universities, and government agencies to compel acquiescence to their extreme agenda.
They also have violated trade agreements and thrown the global economy into turmoil with ludicrous tariffs. They also have undermined our national security with reckless negligence which easily could compromised and endanger the lives of our civilians and service members.
This administration has crossed Rubicon and is now openly in defiance of the judicial branch, flagrantly violating the constitution. Our federal judges’ rulings have no weight in this administration. Even the Supreme Court’s rulings are ignored, while they utilize sophistry, taunts, and outright deception to evade compliance with the court’s orders. We are within a constitutional crisis.
Our last line of defense for our freedom must come from our states. Our state governments cannot bend the knee to tyranny, nor can they leave their citizens without defense against this rapacious federal government. Thankfully, many leaders cross the states have taken heed. Governors, mayors, and leaders across the country have stood in the face of despotism and are actively pursuing measures to thwart the criminal actions of this administration. Attorneys General have continued to go after the criminal administration, and activist groups throughout the country have spent the last several months educating the people on the best ways to withstand this authoritarian assault and mobilized millions against tyranny.
To increase the strength of our defense against this lawless federal government, the states must not only continue to fight back but coordinate their efforts to increase their effectiveness. State legislatures in states that share values of democracy, human rights, dignity must begin to regularly communicate and coordinate legislation between themselves. To find which legislative remedies would best counteract and repair the damage of the criminal cabal in Washington, a general body made of experts in history, law, and other fields relevant to understanding our situation must be assembled, to offer these coordinated states proposals. Since this administration is focused on engaging in a deluge of criminality to overwhelm us, this organization should have rapid response to the different avenues of attack the government is making against us and quickly be able to propose solutions and legislation that can be quickly adopted by the states.
The states must also work in unison and harmony to defend our civil liberties, refusing to allow the federal government to weaponize law enforcement or the national guard to suppress dissent. They must also work to make sure subsequent elections are not meddled with, enabling the voice of the people to be heard.
It is in this time that our states must stand strong, and act as a refugia towards the decline of democracy. It will be because of the actions of resistance from our leaders across the union that our freedom will survive.
