End Cottage weather station occupies a garden site at the heart of the historic village of Brixworth in Northamptonshire, famous for its ancient Saxon church dating from 680AD. The station was set up in 2018 using a Davis Vantage Vue automatic weather station, but has seen significant expansion recently following the closure of Pitsford weather centre in July 2026.

Following the decommissioning of Pitsford weather centre,  there was concern locally about the potential loss of the extensive archive of weather records spanning nearly 30 years and also the disappearance of a trusted source of current local weather data. As a result, End Cottage has taken on the responsibility of acting as custodian of Pitsford's historical weather record and increasing the availability of weather data for the local community and beyond.

The original humble Vantage Vue weather station has since been augmented with a range of manual and automatic instruments.  These include a Met Office approved Stevenson screen housing thermometers, standard 5 inch copper rain gauge, grass and concrete minimim thermometers, microbarograph, precision aneroid barometer and a Davis Vantage Pro 2 Plus automatic weather station featuring a number of sensors for recording temperature, humidity, rainfall, barometric pressure, solar radiation and uv radiation, wind direction and wind speed, and grass and concrete temperatures. The inventory also includes Dines syphoning rainfall recorders and a traditional Campbell Stokes sunshine recorder.  There are no plans currently to set up the Dines recorders as rainfall duration and intensity is already determined using the Davis Vantage Pro system. However, a site has been identified for the Campbell-Stokes recorder and sunshine duration should come on stream as an additional parameter.

There are two types of weather readings at Brixworth. Firstly, weather data is captured using the Davis automatic weather station and relayed in real time to the internet as well as being archived every 10 minutes. Secondly, there are manual observations that are made from the station's traditional instruments and recorded in the pocket register of climatological observations.  These readings are made at 0900 GMT daily. 

The station reports its climatological observations to the Climatological Observers' Link (COL) which publishes a report monthly. This data also forms the basis of the station's Monthly Weather Report which follows the same format as the original Monthly Weather Reports from Pitsford.
