Description & Aim


We are delighted to extend an invitation to you for the upcoming North Africans in Machine Learning (ML) affinity group workshop, set to take place at NeurIPS 2023. This workshop is designed to offer a platform for engaging talks and insightful poster sessions.

We warmly welcome junior researchers and students with an interest in both the theory and applications of Machine Learning, hailing from North African institutions and beyond – encompassing academia and industry. This gathering serves as an opportunity to showcase your latest work and ongoing research endeavors.

We want to emphasize that participation knows no bounds when it comes to nationality – everyone is encouraged to join. Authors are also given the option to have their posters featured on our website and can even request certificates of participation/attendance for this noteworthy event.

NeurIPS Financial Assistance

In support of accessibility, NeurIPS D&I (Diversity and Inclusion) is generously offering travel grants and registration fee waivers to participants. We encourage all attendees to consider applying for NeurIPS registration fee waivers to ensure a diverse and inclusive assembly. Your presence would contribute significantly to the enrichment of discussions and collaborative networking at the workshop. 

The application for the NeurIPS financial assistance is open, with the deadline set on Friday, October 6th, 2023 (6:00 PM Pacific Time).

1- What are the countries considered to be "North African"?

The countries typically considered to be part of North Africa are: Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Sudan. These countries are located in the northern part of the African continent, situated to the north of the Sahara Desert. They share common geographic, cultural, and historical ties, including Arab and Berber influences, as well as a Mediterranean climate in many parts of the region.

2- I am not North African. Can I still attend the workshop?

Absolutely yes! The workshop is open to individuals from all backgrounds and regions, not just North Africans. In fact, it welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds who are interested in discussing the under-representation of North Africans in the field of machine learning (ML). The goal is to foster inclusivity and collaboration among people with a shared interest in this important issue. Your participation and contributions, regardless of your geographic background, can add valuable perspectives and insights to the workshop's discussions and initiatives. You are encouraged to attend and actively engage in the workshop's activities.

3- I am a North African studying/working in an organization/company outside the region. Can I submit a poster?

Of course! North Africans studying or working in institutes or companies outside the region are encouraged to submit a poster for the workshop. The goal is to involve North Africans in the global machine learning community and provide them with opportunities to showcase their research, share their insights, and contribute to addressing under-representation in the field. Your perspective and expertise, even if you are not currently based in North Africa, can be valuable in advancing the workshop's objectives. Please feel free to submit your poster and participate in this important initiative.

4- What are other local communities in North Africa I can join?
