Norma Road Primary originated as the Athlone Q Township Zone B1 Primary School, founded in 1949. Mr. E. Wilkinson being the first principal of the newly established school.
Norma Road Primary has its roots in humble beginnings, in the heart of the community it served, out of the barracks of World War II, in what was regarded as the flats of Kewtown. After spending the first six months of post-war 1949 in those buildings, the first 145 pupils and their five teachers moved into a very short Norma Road to establish the Norma Road Primary School.
The name, Athlone Q Township Zone B1 Primary School was replaced on 9 August 1951 with the name Norma Road Primary School – named after the little road, Norma Road – that was ultimately constructed to access the school. Mr E. Wilkinson headed that procession of pupils and teachers into Norma Road Primary School.
The excited staff and learners were overjoyed to receive a new school. However, the apartheid school authorities provided no desks and furniture, resulting in students having to sit on the floor. This did not prevent the teachers and students from engaging in teaching and learning. To better the situation, the community responded favourably. Donations of chairs and desks followed so that the children’s schooling could improve.
The core business of the school is to provide quality education. School is a vital part of a child’s development and therefore, the school is to provide for the fullest possible development of each student.
