Why are you giving priority to bachelor and master students?

While any level of student can apply to Nordphil, we believe that one has matured enough in the subject of philosophy to have original ideas at that level of study. While PhD level certainly have matured enough in the subject, at this level one often have a broader selection of other venues and conferences to apply to. We encourage Masters students, especially undergraduates, to submit papers to us and try to participate in the conference to showcase their originality and creativity.

Do I have to be a student to apply to Nordphil?

Yes. You have to be an affiliated active student with a Nordic university at the time you submit your abstract to apply to Nordphil. We define an affiliated active student as someone who have been enrolled in a Nordic University during at least the academic year 2022-2023.

Do I have to submit an abstract to attend Nordphil?

No. We welcome an audience. However, since we will be hosting social events and seminars in connection to the presentations, we would appriciate if you take your time to fill out our registration form so we can better plan for these. (The registration will start in August)

Are there any traveling restrictions in Estonia?

Though all travelers arriving in Estonia can enter the country without COVID-19-related restrictions, we still recommend that you take the necessary personal protection when traveling. For example, you can wash and disinfect your hands promptly, wear a mask in crowded areas, etc. 

In addition, from 19.09.2022 entry to Estonia is forbidden to all short-term Schengen visa holding Russian citizens whose aim is tourism, sports, culture, visiting friends or family regardless of their country of destination or visa issuing country. The same restriction are in force also in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. 

Do I have to submit my abstract and deliver my presentation in English?

Yes. Foremost is that we do not want a language barrier for the abstracts or presentations. That's what we asked for last year. This year in particular, given that Tartu is a city with a large international student population, English as the language of the instrument is a friendly choice for the speaker, the conference committee and the audience.

What will happen if my abstract is selected?

If you are selected, you will be offered one of our lecture slots to give a presentation on the subject of your abstract. Each lecture slot is 45 minutes which is planned such that 30 minutes consists of your presentation and 15 minutes is dedicated to questions from the audience.

How many abstracts can I submit?

Given that each abstract submitted are on a different subject or inquiry, you can submit up to 3 abstracts. However, you cannot be selected for more than one abstract. The abstract you are selected on will be the one you will be offered to present.

Will it cost anything to attend the presentations?

No. The presentations will be open to the public.

Is there funding for the presenters?

Yes. We can offer a 50-euro stipendium for travelling and accommodation to those who are selected to present at the conference. "It ain't much but it's honest work!"
