This teaching program provides an in-depth exploration of the key aspects of this unit; graph sketching, and making associations between algebraic and graphical representations. In addition to this, it aims to go beyond these to challenge students' reasoning, problem solving, and communication skills.
Students are led through real, contextualised examples of non-linear relationships, and conduct their own investigations to predict outcomes based on their knowledges. The first and last lessons are centred around rollercoasters; leading to students designing rollercoasters using non-linear relationships for each other to solve.
This teaching program is tailored towards students undertaking Stage 5.1 mathematics, however there is huge potential in some of the activities to stretch students skills beyond the scope of the 5.1 outcomes, and support those in Stage 5.2. Literacy (LIT) and Technology (TECH) based activities are integrated into the program, and identified by their shorthand. Consistent with the NESA curriculum, this teaching program aims to enhance student learning with the use of the graphing calculator Desmos. This is a free, online resource accessible via browser and mobile applications. In addition to it's use in identified activities, it can be used throughout the program as a 'guess and check' tool for student's work.
