Like A Troubled Bridge Over Water...
Across New York City, our most vital public spaces are being stripped of their civic soul and reduced to over-commercialized transit corridors. The Roeblings' intent to create a space meant for awe, contemplation, and shared civic life has been buried beneath litter and souvenirs.
The Bridge's Gap
While its landmark status protects the physical architecture, the bridge lacks a dedicated BID or park conservancy to provide operational & strategic support. Without grassroots stewardship, the bridge's potential as an elevated public park is overlooked.
Although NYC DOT owns & operates the bridge, some components fall under DSNY, NYC Parks, & the NYPD. Without clear & enforced roles, maintenance issues slip through jurisdictional gaps and compound into bigger problems over time.
In 2021, the bike lane was relocated to the roadway level to eliminate dangerous overcrowding. Despite a 2024 ban on vending, vendors have surpassed the footprint of the bike lane. Gridlock can make the pedestrian path impassable, particularly for those with mobility aids.
In 2016, a bridge wire snapped, turning "love locks" into missles that flew down to the traffic below. Current removal efforts can't keep up with the volume of locks left by tourists. Unchecked lock weight continues to threaten the lives of drivers & cyclists.
The bridge was once called "Times Square in the sky", but Times Square has 24/7 sanitation support. Bridge pedestrians see overflowing trash bins and sticker-covered signs, while motorists, cyclists, & the East River ecosystem see trash falling down from the promenade.
🚨A Plea for Crisis Infrastructure
The Brooklyn Bridge is a historic symbol of our city's connectivity; it should also be a place of safety. With understanding that long-term solutions require addressing deep systemic and mental health roots, emergency signage is currently obscured and crisis support signage is lacking.
