Design

The Nokia 5230 Nuron's design is a familiar one, taking after the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and Navigation Edition models. The white-and-silver chassis refreshes the look a bit, but the Nuron keeps the same candy bar shape and dimensions (4.37 inches tall by 2.03 inches wide by 0.61 inch thick) as the 5800s' do. At 3.98 ounces it is just a hair heavier than the other 5800. Overall, it's a very compact and lightweight handset that doesn't feel fragile. However, unlike the 5800 Navigation Edition, the battery cover doesn't have a soft-touch finish, thus it's a bit slick.

T-Mobile packages the Nokia 5230 Nuron with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a 4GB microSD card, a wired stereo headset, a plectrum stylus, and reference material. For more add-ons, please visit our cell phone accessories, ring tones, and help page.

Features

Though its core functions are largely the same as its 5800 series siblings, the Nokia 5230 Nuron's sacrifices a couple of features to keep costs down but it also has a couple of notable enhancements. Starting with the latter, the Nuron includes the new Ovi Maps application, so you get free turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation right out of the box.

The Nokia 5230 Nuron is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network. However, to keep the phone's price down, Nokia didn't include Wi-Fi, so hopefully you live in one of T-Mobile's 3G markets. The handset's full HTML browser support Flash Lite 3.0, you can view Flash content such as YouTube videos right from the Web browser.

Performance

We tested the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1,800/1,900MHz) Nokia 5230 Nuron in New York using T-Mobile service and its call quality was excellent. We had no trouble hearing our friends, and it didn't have a hint of background noise or voice distortion. Our callers were also impressed with the voice clarity, and said they couldn't even tell we were on a cell phone. We didn't experience any dropped calls during our testing period and we had no problem using an airline's voice automated response system. The speakerphone voice quality was mostly good, though the quality did drop just a touch. Though there was plenty of volume, it sounded as if our friends were speaking from a distance. We had no problems pairing the Nuron with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset or the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones.

The Nokia 5230 Nuron comes with a 1320mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 7 hours (GSM)/4.3 hours (3G) and up to 18 days (GSM)/19 days (3G) of standby time. We are still conducting our battery drain tests, but we will update this section as soon as we have results. According to FCC radiation tests, the Nuron has a digital SAR rating of 1.16 watts per kilogram.

The Nokia 5230 (also known as the Nokia 5230 Nuron) is a smartphone manufactured by Nokia, running Symbian OS v9.4, S60 5th Edition. It was released in November 2009 after being announced in August of the same year.[1]

A cost-reduced variant called the 5233 (5228 in some markets) was released in 2010. It also shares the same form factor as the base 5800 and 5230, but is further cut down as it lacks support for 3G networks.[3]

The Nuron version, released only in North America, which has WCDMA Band IV (AWS) enabled, comes preloaded with maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico.[4] In January 2010, Nokia announced that Ovi Maps will be available for free for certain smartphones which includes the Nokia 5230, thus enabling free offline voice guided navigation for more than 180 countries.[5]

It's not the most exciting device, we have to admit, but it should be relatively cheap. According to that leaked information, T-Mobile will be charging $69.99 for the Nokia 5230 Nuron with a new agreement, or $179.99 without. No specific release date as yet, but look for it on shelves within a few weeks time.

"The Nokia 5230 Nuron is a great product of our collaboration with T-Mobile USA and provides consumers with more compelling mobile experiences as they navigate, watch video, play games and social network," said Mark Slater, Vice President, Sales, Nokia. "The Nokia Nuron offers U.S. consumers a unique and compelling mobile experience that caters to their everyday needs and enables them to connect to their passions with an affordable 3G touch smartphone."

"Many of our customers are looking for smartphones that deliver a great mobile Web experience with access to games and applications, all at an affordable price," said Travis Warren, director, product marketing, T-Mobile USA. "We are excited to partner with Nokia to offer our customers the Nokia 5230 Nuron, a 3G smartphone for the masses that delivers features like a full touch screen, free turn-by-turn navigation and a premium storefront for applications."

Released a year later (November 2009), the Nokia 5230 supported 3G, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0. At it's core, it's just the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, but at a cheaper price and without WiFi, a front facing camera, a flash, stereo speakers and a in-the-back-cover stylus (et c.), though with a worse main camera (2MP from 3MP, without the Carl Zeiss's touch). It still has the same 360p TFT touch resistive display, the same CPU and other core internals.

The 5230 was updated until v51, in around early 2012/late 2011. The Phone retailed for about 80EUR, 50EUR less than the 5800 XpressMusic and 100EUR less than the 5800 Navigation Edition.

As of 31 January 2010 the top five countries downloading the new version of Ovi Maps were: China (!), Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. The top five most popular Nokia devices installing the download were: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72.

From next month, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra charge.

And, there are precious few apps available for business users who are serious about staying in contact, on schedule, and on task at all times. The Nokia 5230 is an ideal calling phone, has good media options, and lasts all day on one charge, but lacks business features.

The Nokia Nokia 5230 connects to 3G and Bluetooth devices as expected. We were impressed with how the device connected easily to both Mac and PC laptops to upload and download files over a Bluetooth connection, a feature that the iPhone lacks.

It is also worth mentioning that the Nokia 5230 is a capable, if underpowered, gaming device. Our model included several commercial titles, including Guitar Hero 5 for mobile and Need for Speed Shift.

The new stylish and affordable Nokia 5230 which measures 111 x 51.7 x 14.5/15.5 mm and weights in at 113 g (without stylus) is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2009 for approximately 150 EUR and 260 EUR (include Comes With Music service), respectively. 0852c4b9a8
