Oh boy this bunny has only one thing on its mind, making sure there are more and more sweet babies out there. All warm, fed and well looked after. Does not sound like a boy does it?
But where does the Bunny legend come from? It all started in the 1500s in a part of Europe today called Germany.
In German Lutheran Christians traditions a rabbit character named Osterhase was a stern judge deciding if you were naughty or nice, bringing you coloured eggs, candy and toy quite similar to the red suite Christmas jolly men.
It was Spring…The long cold winter was over, lush green hills, meadows filled with cute fluffy baby bunnies… the beginning of the new life cycle.
I often wondered how has it happened that this ancient legend has merged with the most important event in the history of Christianity? The crucifixion and the resurrection of Lord Jesus? It could possibly have to do with symbolics of something good, fresh and new to come. In my opinion it symbolises Hope of renewal.
The Easter bunny tradition than carried over the Atlantic to the new World where is alive and kicking today. In a way Germany has conquered the world after all in a form of a delicious chocolate bunny and colourful easter eggs.
Sweet victory…
Still believe the Easter bunny is a boy?
