Welcome to my website!
My name is Michaela Nogolová, and I am a PhD student in Czech Language at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava, supervised by Radek Čech and co-supervised by Ján Mačutek. I work in quantitative linguistics, and my main interests are dependency syntax, corpus linguistics and Czech as a second language.
I have studied at the University of Ostrava from the start. I completed a bachelor’s degree in Czech Language and Literature (2017–2020) and a master’s degree in the same field (2020–2022). I have been a PhD student since 2022. My dissertation, Between word and clause: Quantitative analysis of syntactic units, is scheduled for defence in early 2027.
I also study linguistic laws such as the Menzerath-Altmann law, syntactic complexity in learner and native texts, and differences in style across genres and political speech. I have published in the Journal of Quantitative Linguistics, Glottometrics and Jazykovedný časopis, among others. I do my research in Python, and the scripts behind my dissertation are on GitHub.
I have worked on several funded projects. These include the Czech Science Foundation project Quantitative Syntactic Stylistics of Contemporary Written Czech (supervised by Miroslav Kubát) and several Specific University Research projects on syntactic complexity. Currently, I am part of the project Biography of Fake News with a Touch of AI. In 2025 I co-organised the International Workshop on Corpus-Based Analysis of Disinformation Texts as part of this work.
Research stays have been an important part of my PhD. I have visited the Mathematical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, the University of Sheffield, Sofia University and the University of Edinburgh. I also spent an Erasmus+ stay at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona. I have attended summer schools including ESSLLI, the LOT Summer School, the EGG Summer School and NASSLLI 2025 in Seattle.
At the University of Ostrava, I teach courses in syntax, Czech language and automatic text summarization. I also review for Glottometrics. Outside the university, I am a member of the examination committee for the Czech citizenship exam. I also work as an executive and operations coordinator at THE ŽENY, where I handle communication with partners and keep projects on schedule. Earlier, I taught Czech at SCIO and prepared primary school students for their entrance exams. Since May 2026, I have been learning Dutch (Flemish).
