For my Sociology Seminar class, I decided to make my capstone presentation and paper about mental health among kids, teens, and young adults. Mental health struggles can start early in a person’s life, they can be caused by a variety of reasons (Ex: Bullying, Lack of Resources, etc). Oftentimes, it can be overlooked, dismissed, or not properly treated, causing harsh outcomes in the future. It is a growing concern worldwide with rates constantly rising within anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide (One of the leading causes of death). The purpose of my presentation and paper is to analyze the risk factors associated with mental health and the possible solutions in Indiana. Using data set in Indiana, specifically in the Indianapolis, Marion County area. Analyzing and comparing the differences in the calculations between adults and the youth. Also, analyzing and comparing the number of claims that were made from individuals who have mental health challenges (adults and the youth). Some possible solutions would include improved access to care, like an increase in funding for affordable care, funding for school counselors, therapists, and more. Early Education and/or Parental Education by providing mental health education in school curricula. Along with providing education for parents to help ease them into free, easy conversations.
