Welcome to my portfolio site, Noct Art! I am Sammi Jacobs (she/her/they/them), a creator of wondrous tales! I was born and raised in the cold northern city of Buffalo, NY and, after a series of fortunate events (trademark pending), I came to reside in the sunny city of Baton Rouge, LA. I create tales in various mediums such as literature, animation (storyboards and scripts), and comics. My main career goal is to create art that inspires and represents marginalized peoples across media, with an emphasis on fantasy, sci-fi, animation, and gaming.
Since I was a child, I’ve always had an interest in storytelling. I remember making little books for my mom, and the rest of my family, to read in my childhood. When I attended Morehouse College for undergraduate school, during my second year, I took a class on African-American Graphic Novels. In that class, we were tasked with writing a short story and I decided to develop a short story I wrote when I was in high school. My professor took me through the stages of fictional writing, which inspired me to delve deeper into story creation, comics, and animation in my own free time. About a year later, Pixar came to Morehouse to try out a new technical workshop program, and I jumped at the chance to connect with them. After an exchange of contact information and a few calls, I was offered an internship role at Pixar for the summer of 2019 as an Animation Technician, which basically meant that I was tech support of the animation department. During that summer, my world and potential enlarged drastically. I helped artists who had technical issues on the Onward and Soul pipelines. Since Pixar productions were mainly in-house, I learned about the animation feature film process from experienced professionals and got to shadow people in different departments, which led me to storyboarding and story writing.
After that summer, I became inspired and filled with the flames of passion. I started to become more involved in the creative community in Atlanta by attending animation events and participating in game and creative jams. When the world shut down during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple conferences and courses became free, virtual, and open to the public. I took advantage of this and not only attended multiple creative conferences, but I also took multiple classes from Larissa Brown, who was a Nickelodeon artist on The Rugrats and Rocket Power. Toward the end of my time at Morehouse, I was the Lead Storyboard Artist on A Homecoming I’ll Remember, a short film by graduating Spelman student Jasmine McCaskill, which became an official selection in the 2021 Indie Memphis Film Festival and the 2022 Oxford Film Festival. I created the storyboards for an animated scene in the film and even helped the Lead Animator with some animations. After I graduated with a B.A. in English and a Minor in Computer Science, I wrote articles for publications such as HBCUConnect and Translash Media. I also volunteered as an Animation Screener for the New Orleans Film Festival (2022-2024) and a Screener for the Out on Film Festival (2023). As for my day job, I work at IBM as a Training Consultant, developing educational content for our clients, and I volunteer as the President of Fleur de Rainbow, the Baton Rouge LGBTQ+ Business Resource Group (BRG).
