Read on if you would like to know more about the person behind the ceramics!
My name is Nadine Otto and I started my ceramics journey over 8 years ago. I live in Brasschaat and ever since I was a little girl I love beautiful things, especially tableware and design objects. So when my kids were old enough to miss me a few hours per week, I decided to combine this passion with a ceramics class at the art academy in Brasschaat.
I have always been fascinated by handmade objects and not in the least ceramics. So I decided to finally give it a go and I'm so happy I did! I enjoy the quiet and the peace that comes over me when I'm working with clay as well as the feeling of magic and awe when I open the kiln.
Most of my work is porcelain, partly hand-built using slabs, but mainly slipcast. I lost my heart to mold making and slipcasting. I love the possibility of creating items which I can reproduce and still being able to turn every item into a unique object by using different materials or glazes. I strongly prefer organic forms, combined with the frailty and translucency of porcelain. The glazes I use need to add something to the vessel, give it a soul. The imperfections of handmade objects are an inherent part of the character of my work.
To me, ceramics is petrified poetry.
