After finally returning to in-person school, I wanted to make sure I got in one last passion project before leaving the Stuckeman studio behind forever. Inspired by the characters and locations from Over the Garden Wall, this project is a culmination of the skills I have learned over the years in my architecture. The map itself is a hand-drawn render, the inner-frame is burned with a laser-engraver, and the frame is hand-made in the studio woodshop.
Inspired by the tiki bar of the same name at Disneyland, the sign was built in spare time. Trader Sam's hearkens back to the days of exploration when the world seemed a lot larger. Each piece is carved and cut from wood, then painted and antiqued to give it a worn-out look. Text was painted using custom stencils. The tikis were inspired by Marc Davis' designs for the Hawaiian gods Pele and Hina Kuluua for Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. These were carved out and painted as well. The bar’s unique theme has always brought myself joy that I wanted to bring into my own home.
The medium of stop motion is one that has always spoken to me. Taking a single image and breathing life into it through a series of photos taken in succession of one another always feels amazing. I love vinyl Disney figurines. What better way for them to jump off the shelf and give them life? This film, using eighteen figurines and over seventeen hundred photos, can be viewed right here.
During a studio project that involved a study of filters and their effect on light, this mock-up model was built in spare time as a test for the final product, a custom-made desk lit up with LED lights. The effect is created by stacking layers of white Plexiglas, silhouettes, colored filters, and lights on top of one another. The final result creates this effect.
One of the most stunning effects of Disney's Haunted Mansion are the busts that follow you as you move through the attraction. Using a 3D print file found online, I set up the machine to the correct specifications and watched it print. From there, I constructed a hollow box with a sculpted exterior, and placed the inverted bust inside. Next it was placed on a shelf and surrounded with other objects I cultivated to appear seamless with the "scene." Now whenever the bust is lit from the front, it follows the gaze of anyone walking past.
