Passkeys provide the strongest protection against threats like phishing. Once you create a passkey, you can use it to easily sign in to your Google Account, as well as some third-party apps or services, and to verify it's you when you make sensitive changes.

If you have a Google Workspace account through your school or employer, you may not be able to sign in to your account with just a passkey. You can still create passkeys on your devices, but they may only be used as a second factor in 2-Step Verification, in account recovery, and for some sensitive actions in your account that require Google to re-verify your identity.

Important: When you create a passkey, you opt in to a passkey-first, password-less sign-in experience. Create passkeys only on personal devices that you control. Even if you sign out of your Google Account, once you create a passkey on a device, anyone who can unlock the device can sign back into your Google Account with the passkey.

When you sign out of an Android device, you need to sign back with an alternate method. If you perform any sensitive actions while you're signed in that require you to re-verify your identity, you can use the passkey on the Android device itself.

The Microsoft Authenticator app helps you sign in to your accounts if you use two-factor verification. Two-factor verification helps you to access your accounts more securely, especially while viewing sensitive information. Because passwords can be forgotten, stolen, or compromised, two-factor verification is an additional security step that helps protect your account by making it harder for other people to break in.

Phone sign-in is a type of two-step verification. You must still verify your identity by providing a thing you know and a thing you have, but phone sign-in lets you skip entering your account password and performs all of your identity verification on your mobile device.

Before you can turn on phone sign-in, you must turn on two-factor verification. For more information about how to turn on two-factor verification for an account, see Add your work or school account and Add your personal accounts.

Microsoft recommends users move away from using text messages or voice calls for multifactor authentication. Modern authentication methods like Microsoft Authenticator are a recommended alternative. Users can still verify themselves using a mobile phone or office phone as secondary form of authentication used for multifactor authentication or self-service password reset (SSPR).

You can configure and enable users for SMS-based authentication for direct authentication using text message. Text messages are convenient for Frontline workers. With text messages, users don't need to know a username and password to access applications and services. The user instead enters their registered mobile phone number, receives a text message with a verification code, and enters that in the sign-in interface.

Phone call verification isn't available for Microsoft Entra tenants with trial subscriptions. For example, if you sign up for a trial license Microsoft Enterprise Mobility and Security (EMS), phone call verification isn't available. Phone numbers must be provided in the format +CountryCode PhoneNumber, for example, +1 4251234567. There must be a space between the country/region code and the phone number.

If users don't want their mobile phone number to be visible in the directory but want to use it for password reset, administrators shouldn't populate the phone number in the directory. Instead, users should populate their Authentication Phone at My Sign-Ins. Administrators can see this information in the user's profile, but it's not published elsewhere.

With text message verification during SSPR or Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication, a text message is sent to the mobile phone number containing a verification code. To complete the sign-in process, the verification code provided is entered into the sign-in interface.

Some users with phone numbers that have country codes belonging to India or Indonesia may receive their verification codes in WhatsApp. Like RCS, these messages are similar to SMS, but have more Microsoft branding and a verified checkmark. Only users that have WhatsApp receive verification codes through this channel. To check if a user has WhatsApp, we silently try to deliver them a message in the app by using the phone number they registered for text message verification. If users don't have any internet connectivity or they uninstall WhatsApp, they receive SMS verification codes. With phone call verification during SSPR or Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication, an automated voice call is made to the phone number registered by the user. To complete the sign-in process, the user is prompted to press # on their keypad.

Microsoft Authenticator can be used to sign in to any Microsoft Entra account without using a password. You can enable passwordless phone sign-in for multiple accounts in Microsoft Authenticator on any supported iOS device. Consultants, students, and others with multiple accounts in Microsoft Entra ID can add each account to Microsoft Authenticator and use passwordless phone sign-in for all of them from the same iOS device.

Previously, admins might not require passwordless sign-in for users with multiple accounts because it requires them to carry more devices for sign-in. By removing the limitation of one user sign-in from a device, admins can more confidently encourage users to register passwordless phone sign-in and use it as their default sign-in method.

Microsoft Entra ID lets you choose which authentication methods can be used during the sign-in process. Users then register for the methods they'd like to use. The Microsoft Authenticator authentication method policy manages both the traditional push MFA method and the passwordless authentication method.

If you enabled Microsoft Authenticator passwordless sign-in using PowerShell, it was enabled for your entire directory. If you enable using this new method, it supersedes the PowerShell policy.
