What is Model UN?

Model UN is a club in which members vote, speak, and write on behalf of a country in order to come up with a solution to a pressing global issue. Members learn about negotiation, diplomacy, current events, global politics, and more. In the past, we've discussed many subjects, including the Zika virus, climate refugees, Hurricane Katrina, North Korea, Brexit, Catalonia, and pirates on the Somali Coast. We also attend conferences (MUN competitions) in order to enjoy engaging debate and meet people from all over the country and the world!

Is MUN a big commitment?

Some people come to every meeting and attend every conference, while others come once a month. If you can't come very often and fear falling behind, MUN is the type of club where you can be caught up fairly easily, and we discuss a new topic every few weeks. Even if you aren't that committed, every delegate adds so much to the meeting just by being there. Still, if you want to get as much out of the club as possible and/or hope for a leadership position in the future, you should try to come as often as you can.

What is the goal of the club?

Our goal is to go to conferences and to be able to contribute to the discussion and share our ideas. In the process, we also hope that people will become more informed about current events and global politics, gain confidence in public speaking, begin to improve their writing, learn how to effectively research a topic, and build their teamwork skills. In addition, we hope that people will make friends and have fun!

Will I need any background knowledge going into MUN?

Background knowledge is great, of course, but you won't need it to be a part of this club. We will provide you with everything you'll need, including study guides for each topic, and you will learn more about the topic we are discussing as the meeting progresses.

Are the any fun aspects of Model UN?

Yes, of course there are! We often have food at the meetings. You can make friends and eat, all while discussing a pressing global issue! Secondly, we have fun events. At the beginning of the year, we have an annual Starbucks vs. Dunkin' Donuts debate, where those who attend enjoy free coffee and food. We also have an occasional team dinner and an annual end-of-year MUN party.

Finally, we go to exciting conferences! This year, we'll stay in hotels for two conferences.
