Unfortunately, the Feb 26 Mail Theft Town Hall was another disappointment, echoing the same tired script from previous meetings. Despite being asked repeatedly to report and provide evidence, it felt like a replay of the same unproductive advice. The focus remained on those who don't report, ignoring the many residents who diligently did so and followed all the steps.
This was not your traditional town hall where residents were allowed to get up to speak. They managed the input by asking folks to put questions on paper which made it difficult to ask follow-up questions and was not a meaningful way for people to express their frustration. Additionally, Councilmember Kaplan’s Office asked city staff to kick out our group which was trying to table outside the venue.
The Town Hall left us with a sense that there is a serious lack of organized coordination among the agencies involved. Despite their assurances, mail theft seems to be a low priority for those with the power to make a change.
CONCERNING ITEMS FROM THE TOWN HALL:
No Representation from the Postal Inspection Service: Councilmember Kaplan didn't invite them, explaining that the USPIS won't prosecute mail theft under $250,000. Yet, they were listed as participants on the meeting flyer.
Last-Minute Meeting: The new North Command Captain only met the postal inspector the day before the Town Hall.
Lack of Familiarity with HOA-funded LPR Cameras: Despite extensive coverage in North Natomas, the North Command Captain seemed unaware of their functionalities and SacPD's access to the data.
Data on Referrals: Some data on SacPD referrals of mail theft cases to the District Attorney's Office was provided, but there was no explanation for the lack of follow-up with residents who reported crimes.
Limited Patrol Officers: Only about three patrol officers cover North Natomas per shift, as reported by the North Command Captain.
Delayed Audit Results: Congressman Bera's office is still awaiting the results of a USPS Inspector General audit, which might take another eight months. HOA representatives who have been working on this issue for years have received no response to their requests to be interviewed as part of the audit.
We deserve better coordination and action from those in charge. Let's continue to push for change and hold these entities accountable!
