The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Netaji Nagar College is arguably the oldest department of its kind in the University of Calcutta at the undergraduate level. It will not at all be an exaggeration to suggest that the department of our college has a glorious past, a remarkable present and a promising future ahead. Students of the department have not only been excelling in the profession of mainstream Journalism, but also have been performing with distinction in other media-related areas like Advertising, Public Relations, Film Making, Content Writing and so on and so forth. Perhaps, this is the only department in our college which can humbly boast of having members of the faculty from the departmental alumni itself.
This amply suggests that over the years, apart from training students to make a foray into the world of professional journalism, we have been remarkably successful in encouraging many of them to pursue their careers in academics too. To the best of our knowledge, almost all major news organisations in the state- both print and electronic have the alumni of our department working in them in some capacity or the other. Even we have alumni working in India's top-rated National Daily- The Times of India'. A close look at the chronology of 'NAAC- related history' of the institution will convincingly showcase our commendable performance. The Department has been extremely smart in adapting itself to the demands thrown at it by the overhauling of the entire academic system in 2018 with the introduction of the 'Choice Based Credit System' and the semesterised system.
Our thrust on familiarising our students with latest technology, so inseparably associated with modern Journalism is amply manifested in the recent launch of our digital portal 'Moner Utthone' . The response to the digital portal, just in a span of one and a half months has been absolutely overwhelming! So much so, the viewership today is spread across several continents, which by any means is a big achievement of the department. In a nutshell, courtesy the wonderful collaboration between us and our students, we are confident of bringing many laurels and distinctions to the department in the not too distant future.
