Demonstrated Achievement #1.
The first achievement I would like to outline is my on-air segment from June 13th, 2022 where I broke down Games 4 and 5 of NBA Finals. On the block, I had my first opportunity to browse the ESPN sound database the station has access. In the database are clips from post-game presser's, various ESPN TV shows, and radio broadcasts that cover everything basketball and I got to pick and choose what sound bytes fit my segment. From there, I downloaded and chopped the clips up for producer Marco to toss to me while I present.
I learned from this achievement how to edit sound and browse the database with ESPN's saved sounds. This wasn't my first appearance on air but it's the one I'm the most proud of because of how proficient I studied film for this segment and the consideration I took in choosing sounds to transition with. Previously my throws (as they call it) to sound clips were lackluster so I took into consideration how to improve after receiving tips from host Nate and I came onto the show much stronger and more confident.
This is great experience for the future of my career if I decide to do anything involving audio. If i pursue an on air career, knowing the topics I speak on is very important obviously, but how I present the information is the difference in who is tuning in or who's tuning out. My skills for behind the camera and microphone work will improve through this by learning my way around a sound database and converting and uploading sound to Omny and the local server the station pulls from.
Demonstrated Achievement #2.
The second achievement I would like to outline is my on-air segment from June 23rd, 2022. In this block, I got to expand on my personal life and reintroduce myself for listeners who haven't learned anything about me. Then I transitioned into my well-prepared draft analysis. This was a night before the draft and the hosts of The Border Patrol had tasked me beforehand to predict the top ten picks, landing spots for KU prospects in the draft, and other draft questions such as risers, fallers, potential busts and underrated players.
For this project, not only did I get to recall the current knowledge I have, but I got to watch more unfamiliar prospects leading up to the show. I once again had to prepare sounds from the ESPN database and weaved them into a narrative to construe throughout the allotted time I had. You can even hear where I practiced my throws to the producer and him not being alert to my cue.
I felt my analysis really wowed my employers and I think my passion for the topic helped enhance my ability to give a proper segment. They acknowledge how I've been trying to improve my on air presence. I have also been in charge of more podcast editing and preparing the show for online release, learning and using CoolEdit and understanding how OmnyStudio's logistics and listener traffic works, really giving me a better feel for the industry.
Demonstrated Achievement #3.
The third achievement I would like to outline is my on-air segment from June 30th, 2022 where I began to expand my reach of sports I discuss on air. I was challenged by one of my bosses, Nate Bukaty, to have prepared a non-basketball discussion topic for my bi-weekly segment. I have been coined for having extensive NBA knowledge because I watch a ton of the sport and keep up with the nuance and storylines that go with it. But my higher-ups know i can expand outside of the NBA. So I created talking points to discuss Big 12, specifically the University of Kansas, football and how I think they can shock the NCAA landscape.
This block I had to discuss KU football helped me branch and research material outside of the NBA, you can hear in the segment that I was itching to discuss the wild west that was NBA free agency. Instead, I used my resources such as ESPN+ to read articles on the culture that was being built behind Coach Lance Liepold. I researched the incoming transfers from various Power 5 schools and explained nuance of how Liepold had established a precedent of transforming lackluster teams and that KU is next on the chopping block. I was thrilled to talk about something I have been passionate and adamant about outside of basketball and hope to discuss more football once the NFL and NCAA season begins. Variation is only expanding my range of coverage every time I go live on air.
