You head over to the OR to check the OR slate for the rest of the day and find your attending in the doctors lounge.
You follow the signs to the OR, swipe your card and the double doors open...
Here is an overall layout of the main OR Entrance area. In this area you can find today's OR slates listing which patients are scheduled for surgery, who will be performing the surgery and anesthesia, the expected start time as well as which OR the surgery will be taking place in. It is also prudent to check this area the day before you are scheduled in the OR as you can also find the slates for upcoming OR days. See the following diagram:
You check OR slates for today, it looks like it's going to be a full day in the OR and that your first case of the day is a laparoscopic cholecystectomy for an acute cholecystitis that came in yesterday. You make a mental note to quickly review hepatobiliary anatomy as well as pathophysiology of cholecystitis in anticipation for any potential questions while you're in the OR.
After reviewing the OR slate you see that your first scheduled patient is already in chair 1 in the pre-op area. You grab their chart from slots above the OR slates for today and open it up. You quickly review their surgical consult note and for practice, have a look at their ECG. Then you open up Powerchart and review their most recent bloodwork and available imaging:
That's quite the gallbladder...
You quickly introduce yourself to the patient, confirm their history and perform a brief physical exam.
It's about time you go and meet your attending to discuss both your case in the ED and today's surgeries. You head into the Surgeon's Lounge your attending is sitting on the couches drinking a coffee...
Helpful point: Be chill in surgeon's lounge (ie. mainly volume); med students have been kicked out for being too loud when people are trying to relax. Just be considerate, some docs get cranky if they're having a rough shift. The doctors lounge is not meant to be a place for med students to hang out and socialize, we have our lounge on the 5th floor for that.
