Hastings Hotel
Hastings Hotel was built in 1867 by Mr. Hastings, the namesake of the street. The hotel was managed by Sandford Tudor.
In January 1911, Hastings House caught fire. Hotel employee Tom Bloomfield discovered the fire and managed to evacuate all guests. Tom was also a volunteer firefighter, so he ran across Main Street to ring the fire bell and get the fire fighting equipment. At that time, the equipment was primitive and inefficient, and the building burned down completely.
This is the fire that convinced the citizens of Parkhill to build a water system for the town. Construction completed in 1912.
CIBC purchased the brick building you see today in 1923. The building had originally been constructed for a Parkhill branch of the Merchants Bank, which was taken over by the Bank of Montreal. In 2025, the building has been occupied by CIBC for over 100 years!
In 1961, the Canadian Bank of Commerce merged with the Imperial Bank of Canada, and the bank became known by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, CIBC.
