James A. Knapton moved to Parkhill in 1875 and worked for Hawkey Carriage Works across the street until he purchased this lot in 1880 and built Dominion Carriage Works, also known as Knapton's Carriage Factory. This building burned down in 1927.
Possibly realizing the demand for carriages was declining, James' son J.C. Knapton built a garage on the plot in 1928, who operated the business until his death in 1946.
Fred Russell then purchased the business, replaced the building with a larger structure and operated the business as Russells Motor Sales. This garage was eventually torn down, possibly sometime in the 1970s.
A mini mall, the Parkhill Centre Plaza, was erected on the plot in 1979. Various businesses have occupied the building since, including a branch of the Royal Bank, which closed in 1983, Dr. Wagner’s practice, Tradition’s Deli Cafe, Hannon Real Estate, and Parkhill Home Hardware from 2004 to 2013. Today, the plaza is home to the LCBO, Grammies Pizza, and Dollar Haven.
