Proceed down the north side of Main St.
Site is on the northwest corner of Henderson and Main St.
This location was where one of the first general stores was located.
The building was built in 1899 for the Standard Bank of Canada. In 1928, the Standard Bank merged with the Bank of Commerce, and all banking was carried under the name the Canadian Bank of Commerce. In 1961, the name changed to Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, CIBC.
CIBC remained at this location until 1980, when a new CIBC was built across the road. The building has since been converted into a multi-unit apartment complex.
On this block where the former bank sits, were a variety of early Ailsa Craig businesses. To the right of the bank, was a fruit and vegetable store ran by George Mark. To the left was Carrie Bremner and her daughter's ice cream, confectionaries and a tea room.
