Joe Diaz, Former Chief Meteorologist at KOAT-TV
Why did you join the New Mexico AMS/NWA group?
This group is something I always wished we had in New Mexico. A meteorology group where professionals from all sectors can connect and share knowledge. Now, let’s expand it!
What's your favorite weather?
My favorite weather is New Mexico’s fall. The vibrant foliage, crisp yet comfortable temperatures, and clear skies make it perfect for hiking, festivals, and enjoying the outdoors.
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation spot is anywhere with a stunning pool or ocean, perfect for swimming and soaking up the sun.
What's your hobby?
My hobbies include biking, hiking, and golfing, with plans to dive back into playing the guitar. I’m also set to earn my scuba certification a few weeks after retiring.
Do you have a hidden talent?
My hidden talent? I can always pick the one umbrella that’ll flip inside out during a gusty New Mexico storm!
What advice would you give young people pursuing a career in meteorology?
Love math and science? Dive into meteorology with curiosity and strong communication skills—your ability to forecast and connect with communities can make a real impact!
Red or Green?
My favorite green has that great roasted flavor and little chunks of ground pork or ground beef is mixed in. No one seems to make green that way anymore so I go red or Christmas.
Favorite Food?
Carne adovada or of course rib eye steak and lobster
What do you love about New Mexico?
I love New Mexico for its majestic mountains and scenic rivers, perfect for outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, plus its spicy cuisine and vibrant culture.
What is your next adventure?
Retirement is my next grand adventure - a thrilling new chapter in life! I’m ready to conquer the wilds of New Mexico’s mountains, savor spicy green chile dishes, and, with a hearty laugh, finally take authority over my cluttered garage and closets!
