Sun Coast Council Contributes to Coast Guard Morale
15th, 2024
Â
On a tour of the brand-new facilities at the USCG Station Ft Myers Beach, the Sun Coast Council members noted that the beautiful new billiard table in the rec room didn’t have any billiard balls or cue sticks. The billiard table is beautifully constructed with a huge Coast Guard logo in the center of the table.Â
So, the council decided to fix the problem by donating a new set of billiard balls and cue sticks. Bill Urbanek purchased the equipment, his wife, Trish, printed our name on the ball rack and his Army ROTC daughter helped to deliver them. The base Skipper CWO4 Chris Cone and BMC John Ghilain the base XO were there to receive them.

July 19th, 2023
On July 19th at 1130 we gathered at the Moss Marina, 450 Harbor Ct, Fort Myers Beach, where the Coast Guard Cutter CROCODILE is tied up, since the Coast Guard Station is still under repairs from Hurricane Ian. We came to help the skipper, Senior Chief Joseph Slater, honor the sailor of the year and sailor of the quarter with our “Beer on the Pier" celebration where the Sun Coast Council provided sub sandwiches and a chest of drinks: beer, soda and water. Sailor of the Year 2023 went to Petty Officer First Class Boatswain's Mate BM1 Eduardo Sanchez. The current Sailor of the Quarter award went to Petty Officer Second Class Culinary Specialist CS2 Dominic Ambroselli.
We also recognized a summer cadet from the USCG Academy, Cadet Darius Gadsden, that the cutter has been sponsoring for five weeks until he departs on leave before the school year starts.
It was a great time to welcome the new executive officer of the cutter, BM1 Branden Smith, enjoy talking with the crew and take a tour of the Cutter for those that haven't seen it before. We were joined at the celebration by Congressional staffers from the offices of Senator Rick Scott and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.

In June we completed our adoption of Navy Training Squadron VT3. The Red Knights of VT3 are located at Naval Air Station Milton Florida.Â
The Sun Coast Council will be giving an award to the Instructor of the year accompanied by a donation to a 501c3 aviation themed organization like the Civil Air Patrol. You can read more about the VT3 at their website:

1On November 3 the training squadron from Pensacola FL, VT3 made their first fly-in to Punta Gorda airport. VT3 will be making stops at the PGD terminal over the next few years as a part of their student cross country training flights. Local NJROTC students will be invited to meet the pilots and see the planes. VT3 is one of Naval Aviation’s primary flight training squadrons. The Red Knights of VT3 are located at Naval Air Station Milton Florida. Appropriately, VT3 provides the highest quality training to student aviators from the Sea Services of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. VT-3 was tasked as the first Navy training squadron to fly the new Joint Primary Pilot Training aircraft, the T-6B Texan II. The T-6B is faster, stronger, and more efficient than the old T-34C.

Our scholarship awardees greatly benefitted from their experiences this summer and were very appreciative. One example is Cadet Nina Dotres who attended the sailing academy at Eckard College in June. She wrote the following to us:Â
“I would like to thank the Navy League for your generosity in providing me with the wonderful opportunity and experience of learning how to sail. I attended the first week of sail academy and I had a fantastic time learning how to sail and race. In learning the wonders of sailing I also had the great opportunity to learn and develop myself as a leader. The skills required to properly sail a sailboat have taught me the importance of communication and teamwork. Some of the essential qualities that a leader must acquire. Due to this experience, I have gained a desire to continue racing and sailing. Bringing home the 3rd place skipper trophy has given me a great sense of pride. I am so very grateful for this experience. Thank you again for all you and the Navy League have done and continue to do for the youth in our community. “
April-May, 2023
In late April and early May members of the SCC attended award ceremonies and presented the Navy League’s highest award for Cadets, the Theodore Roosevelt Youth Medal, to a cadet from each school that we sponsor: Port Charlotte High School, Charlotte High School, and Lemon Bay High School. Each of the audiences consisted of 70 to 150 parents We also presented a letter from Senator Rick Scott to each awardee congratulating them on their great performance. The receiving cadets were blown away and the senior instructors for each group were excited that the Senator would take the time to recognize their organization. Thank so much for the little things that can mean so much!
April 16th, 2023
The Sun Coast Council held a Sunday Brunch at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda on the 16th of April. The guest speaker, Vice Admiral Charles Martoglio USN (ret) gave an outstanding presentation on “China in the Context of US and Global Security”. The attendees felt that they had attended the first class of a master’s degree in international affairs! VADM Martoglio was there to honor his father Charlie Martoglio, a long time Navy League member and Sun Coast Council leader, who passed away earlier this year. Also attending was Erin Dever, the Southwest Florida District Director for Senator Rick Scott, to meet the council and read a personal letter from the Senator to the council. Towards the end of the event, the council presented four scholarships to NJROTC cadets from Charlotte High School and Port Charlotte High School. The scholarships went to sophomores and juniors to attend the US Naval Academy summer program and to go to the Sailing Academy at Eckards College to learn sailing, navigation, and leadership.
All, I am very sad to inform you that our friend and shipmate Charlie Martoglio passed away on January 10th in Punta Gorda’s Bayfront hospital. He died of COVID related complications while his daughter Mary Anne was sitting with him.
Charlie was a strong and long term supporter of the Navy League in general and our Suncoast council in particular. He served a term as president and several years as vice president of our council. Charlie was a very strong supporter of the cadet programs and an ardent advocate for Korean War Veterans. For me personally, he was a good friend and treasured advisor. We will honor Charlie and his life at our spring luncheon on April 16th. Two pictures are attached of Charlie presenting an award to a Sea Cadet and attending the September luncheon with two of his daughters, Mary Anne and Fran.
Services for Charlie were held on Saturday, 14 January, at Charlotte Memorial Cemetery on Indian Springs Cemetery Road in Punta Gorda. It was a wonderful ceremony highlighted by four of his children speaking about their experiences with him.Â
His full story can be read at:Â

The family was very generous to ask that in lieu of flowers that contributions should be made to the NLUS Sun Coast Council. We’ll put those donations towards our JNROTC Scholarships.
September 25th, 2022
On September 25th, 2022, the Sun Coast Council held a Sunday Brunch at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda where we recognized the youth programs in our area. The Sun Coast Council sponsors four units in Charlotte and Lee Counties: The Gulf Eagle Division of the Sea Cadets from Fort Myers, and NJROTC units from Charlotte High School, Port Charlotte High School and Lemon Bay High School.  Â
Our first speaker at the brunch was BMC Geoffrey Dufur, the senior naval instructor for Port Charlotte High School. The Chief has been instrumental since arriving in turning around the unit at PCHS both in quality of the program and the resultant tripling of enrollment. Chief Dufur gave us an overview of the program including academics, the size and diversity of the unit, activities and teams such as orienteering and community service. The growth in size and energy of the PCHS is wonderful to see and the efforts of the cadets are inspiring!Â
Our second set of speakers were cadet recipients of scholarships from the Sun Coast Council for Summer Programs 2022. First up was Cadet/LCDR Colin Wilburn this year’s commanding officer of the Charlotte High School NJROTC unit. Cadet Wilburn was one of three recipients of funding to attend the Summer Leadership Academy. He shared with us the rigors of the camp and how he believes it better prepared him for a leadership role this academic year.Â

On May 21st, 2022, the Sun Coast Council celebrated Armed Forces Day with the Sea Cadets of the Gulf Eagle Division with a luncheon at the scenic club house of the Palmetto Pines Country Club in central Cape Coral.Â
Our very special guest speaker was Coach Barry Bowman, head coach of the Cape Coral High School Football team. In his 30 years as a coach in Texas, before coming to Cape Coral, he compiled a 107-41 record, a 26-6 playoff record, won three state crowns, earned 17 different coach of the year awards and was named a top-10 all-time coach by the Texas High School Coaches Association. His entertaining talk was inspiring with two key take ways: pay attention to details and be committed to what ever you are pursuing.Â
We also paid tribute to our departed shipmate, Senior Chief Chris Rubino. Testimonials were given by Bill Urbanek, XO of the Gulf Eagle Division of the Sea Cadets and Mike Wooster to share about his impact to the Navy League, the Sea Cadets and the local NJROTC cadets.
John Lind also presented the latest efforts by our council to advocate to our congressmen and senators concerning the needs of the sea services.
April 18, 2022
Monday we had a great visit with the crew of the USCG Cutter CROCODILE in Fort Myers Beach. The Sun Coast Council presented two Sailor of the Quarter awards - 4Q 2021 to BM2 Eduardo Sanchez and 1Q 2022 to CS2 Dominic Ambroselli. After the ceremony we enjoyed sandwiches and "beer on the pier" at the Moss Marina where the CROCODILE is currently tied up. Â

On November 17th the SCC held a luncheon in Naples at the Audubon Country Club. This was a joint event of the Southwest Chapter of the US Naval Academy Alumni and the Sun Coast Council. Our special guests were retired RADM Larry Chambers and Sarah, his delightful wife and publicist. RADM Chambers, a distinguished graduate of the Naval Academy, related his experience as the Commanding Officer of the USS Midway during the historic Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon. Secondly, as a groundbreaking distinguished graduate, he shared about his impressions of the changes at the academy from 1952 until now.
Also attending the luncheon was Helen Pferdehirt, from Congressman Byron Donalds office, to welcome RADM Chambers and talk about the nominating process for the academies.Â
November 17, 2021
On November 17th the SCC held a luncheon in Cape Coral to hear from the CO/XO of the US Coast Guard Cutter Crocodile homeported in Fort Myers Beach that the council sponsors. Our council covers a large geographic region, from Boca Grande to Naples, so we are moving the monthly events around to different areas to encourage attendance and find new members. The November luncheon was held at the Brotherhood of Heroes Resource Center & Museum in Cape Coral to give our members a chance to tour the museum and see what the resource center does. Master Chief Mike Collis (CO) and Chief Chris Wetzel (XO) were our guest speakers and they spoke about life aboard an 87-foot cutter, what they do to accomplish the mission of the Coast Guard, and general observations about what’s happening in the Coast Guard today. We received numerous very positive comments on their talk…people like to hear about the Coast Guard firsthand! We also tried something new by having the event catered by Mission BBQ of Fort Myers. The consensus is that they did a good job and made it easy for us.
In addition to John Lind’s legislative update, we had our first buck-a-brag activity. For a dollar donation to the SCC jar, you get to brag about one thing in your life. It was funny, inspiring and it raised a few extra dollars. You can find out more about the Brotherhood of Heroes at their website: https://thebrotherhoodofheroes.com
September 26, 2021
On September 26th, the Sun Coast Council held its monthly meeting at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda. The was the first regular monthly meeting we've held in 16 months due to the COVID pandemic. The brunch focused on local youth programs. Major Billie Rankin USMC (Ret), the Senior Naval Instructor for the Charlotte High School NJROTC, kicked off the meeting by giving illustrations from her own career of how the treatment of women in the military has changed. She then shared about her experience with the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) and her current work with the NJROTC. Ensign Robert Williams NSSCC, Commanding Officer of the Gulf Eagle Division of the Sea Scouts talked about the activities of the Division and then introduced seven cadets. Cadet Roche talked about the training schools he has been to including Space, Submarine and Drone Flight earning his bronze wings. The Council Board of Directors presented the Navy League Theodore Roosevelt Medal to Cadet Roche for his outstanding performance. John Lind wrapped up the meeting with a report on current legislative affairs and efforts by the Navy League.
Congressman Greg Steube of Florida's 17th District
May 26, 2021
On May 26th, the Sun Coast Council met with Congressman Greg Steube of Florida’s 17th district. It was a virtual meeting on Zoom to present to him the Navy League priorities for funding and legislation in FY 2022. The brief prepared by NLUS headquarters and covered issues for all the sea services. The 17th district covers areas of both the Sun Coast Council and the Sarasota Manatee council so we had members from both councils attend:
Mike Wooster – Sun Coast – primary presenter
Jerry St. Germain – Sarasota/Manatee and the Region VP for Legislative Affairs
John Lind – Sun Coast Council VP for Legislative Affairs
Bo Hamrick – Board Member of both Suncoast and Sarasota-Manatee Councils
We presented the NLUS “Grassroots Presentation” and then also covered how the councils serve his district with support to NJROTC units, Sea Cadets and Young Marines…Nearly a thousand students in all. It was rewarding later in the day to receive a note from his Legislative Director that Rep Steube and his staff had reviewed the Shipyard Act (H.R. 2860) that we covered in the meeting, and he decided to become a co-sponsor of the bill!

For National Maritime Day Dru DiMattia, our council lead for Merhcant Marine Affairs and the President of the American Merchant Marine Veterans Association, organized a great outdoor event in the Eco Park, Cape Coral to honor the service of our Merchant Marine. Dru did a fabulous job of pulling the event together. There were four WW II veterans of the Merchant Marine in attendance and our Gulf Eagle Division Sea Cadets provided the color guard. Dignitaries attended included Congressman Donalds from Florida 19th District, the regional director from Senator Rubio’s office, Florida House Representative John Gunter, the Mayors of Cape Coral and Sanibel, and Carol Rae Culliton, the Director of the Brotherhood of Heroes Museum in Cape Coral. Dru spoke on the bravery of the Merchant Marine in past wartime and the key role they played in supplying our forces. Mike Wooster spoke on the future needs of the Merchant Marine to stay strong and ready. The ceremony concluded with one of the Sea Cadets striking eight bells on the ships bell to recognize those that had died in serving the country.
April 2021
In January we lost one of our council members, Peter Gannon. Peter was VP of Merchant Marine Affairs and was instrumental in getting recognition for the efforts of our Merchant Mariners in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In April we donated a memorial paver to the Vietnam Memorial in Punta Gorda in Peter’s Memory.

The Sun Coast Council and the American Merchant Marine Veterans Association honored World War II veteran George Koch. Mr. Koch served in the U.S. Merchant Marine making the Arctic convoy runs to bring supplies and support to the US ally, the Soviet Union. These convoys fought off ferocious air attacks, submarine attacks and even surface raiders such as the famed Nazi Battleship the Tirpitz to bring much needed supplies to our allies. George was awarded the Ushakov Medal from the Russian Federation and the Florida 17th District MVP award by Congressman Greg Steube. The event was attended by over 30 cadets of the Charlotte High School and Lemon Bay High School NJROTC units.
