As researchers and practitioners explore the use of AI to support counterspeech against online hate and misinformation, it is critical to center the perspectives of the people already doing this work. In this talk, I draw on interviews and survey data with counterspeakers to explore how they understand the goals, risks, and possibilities of using AI in this space. Counterspeakers report diverse and sometimes competing goals—ranging from de-escalation and community support to public persuasion and personal catharsis—which means that "effectiveness" cannot be assumed to have a singular definition. I argue that research must remain attentive to these varied goals and the ways that AI interventions may support or undermine them. I also outline how AI might assist counterspeakers at three key stages of the counterspeech process: (1) deciding whether to engage; (2) crafting contextually appropriate, goal-aligned responses; and (3) managing the personal, social, and emotional aftermath of speaking out. Throughout, I highlight counterspeaker concerns around safety, authenticity, and voice, offering recommendations for responsible and participatory design. Ultimately, I advocate for a human-centered approach that positions AI not as a replacement for counterspeakers, but as a potential partner in their ongoing, high-stakes work.

In an increasingly fragmented and polarized media landscape, journalism plays a crucial role in defending democratic values by actively countering disinformation and hate speech. This talk explores how journalistic work functions in practice to identify, verify, and respond to harmful content while maintaining ethical standards and public trust. Through case studies, examples from newsroom routines, and a focus on fact-checking methods, the session will also address the tension between defending facts and protecting freedom of expression, the role of platform dynamics, and the emotional and professional toll of covering hate-driven narratives.
