Through the 80s Mr. Nunley continued to train and teach with Master Pereira until 1991, when he finally decided to expand the style by teaching in numerous Rec Centers and Gymnasiums within the East Bay Area. His belief was by taking his own life experiences growing up in the inner city along with the discipline from the Martial Arts would help the troubled youth, which correlates with the actual meaning and English Translation of Wado Ki Kai: “ To learn from all thing.”
Mr. Nunley's passion for the arts and the youth grew tremendously over time as he finally decided to take the next big adventure of his life. In 1999, Mr. Nunley now a husband and father opened a dojo of his own in Pittsburg, California called Nunley’s Karate-Do, or as today’s students and tournament competitors reverently call it, “N.K.D.” This dojo has serviced teens and adults in the Pittsburg Community for over a decade and has operated as a Martial Arts Studio, Fitness Center and overall social hall for parents and students to sweat off their plights and frustrations on the mat. With a fine balance between stern coaching and positive reinforcement Mr. Nunley has witnessed the majority of his students escape the detrimental circumstances in the community to later become, College Graduates, Military men, and Self Employed individuals who all attribute their success to growing up in the Arts. Nunley’s Karate-Do still stands as a school of discipline, Traditional Japanese forms, fast pace sparring and self-defense with a collective of first place regional titles, and 20 World Champion competitors. With such achievements Mr. Nunley still finds room for growth and plans to continue his work with the youth in the Pittsburg Community, remaining optimistic and confident for the next generation.
