When living in an older home or suspecting of possible Asbestos presence in home construction materials, the New Jersey Environmental Inspectors and Analysts Association (NJEIAA) underscores the importance of hiring a reliable Asbestos inspection company.
Choosing an Asbestos inspection service provider is a serious task, since exposure to asbestos at whatever level can be very detrimental to the health. This was underscored by the New Jersey Environmental Inspectors and Analysts Association (NJEIAA) in an interview with the local media.
The NJEIAA says it is crucial that the homeowner or commercial property owner hires an expert licensed service as this will ensure the reliability of the results. “Literally the matter is of life and death because if asbestos presence goes undetected it could mean irreversible and terminal illnesses like lung cancer and asbestosis,” warns NJEIAA President Noel Ivanson.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency has come up with a comprehensive guide on hiring an Asbestos Inpsector as part of the online literature they published about Asbestos. Included in their advice are some tips that will ensure that a homeowner gets to choose the right inspector and analyst for the job.
“Avoid a conflict of interest. An asbestos professional hired to assess the need for asbestos repair or removal should not be connected with an asbestos firm that does the actual repair or removal of materials. It is better to use two different firms so there is no conflict of interest. Ask asbestos professionals to document their completion of federal or state-approved training. Each person performing work should provide proof of accreditation to do asbestos work. Check on the past performance of your asbestos professional with your local air pollution control board, the local agency responsible for worker safety, and the Better Business Bureau.”

Third-Party service ratings website Angie’s List has also mentioned several things a homeowner has to keep in mind when choosing an Asbestos Inspection Service. In their article they underscored the importance of being familiar with state laws and licensing when it comes to Asbestos Inspection and Abatement services.
“The federal government does not license or accredit asbestos testers, and asbestos licensing and training regulations vary by state and local municipality. Learn your local laws and verify that the contractor you hire holds the appropriate licensure and, if necessary, the permits required for the job. Make sure the contractor is familiar with OSHA and EPA standards for handling asbestos. Even if your state doesn’t require it, verify that the supervisor’s training meets the EPA Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan, which OSHA requires for all asbestos removal jobs.”
