Mission: 


The New Jersey Adapted Physical Education Consortium’s mission is to provide an avenue for

the promotion of high quality physical education and activity for individuals with disabilities

within the state of New Jersey, by providing the following:

● The development and dissemination of best practices, and research within the fields of

health, physical education, sports, recreation, and physical activity, to current and future

practitioners within these fields who support and instruct individuals with disabilities

within the state.

● Support and advocacy for the development of legislative policies that secure access to the

areas of health, physical education, sports, recreation, and physical activity for

individuals with disabilities.

● Avenues for the development of professionals to increase the accessibility of high

quality, evidence based educational practices for individuals with disabilities in New

Jersey.

President: Bayley Hickey - Burlington County Special Services School District

Bayley Hickey M.S. CAPE, is an Adapted Physical Education Specialist at Burlington County Special Services School District in New Jersey. He received his B.S. in Health and Physical Education from William Paterson University in 2018, where upon completion he taught general physical education in multiple settings to students from preschool aged, though students in transition programming.  He obtained a PK-6 teaching position at Chesterfield Township School district in 2019, where he developed an assessment driven adapted physical education program with multiple service delivery methods, ranging from small group physical education, integrated settings with APE specialist support, to consultative models for general PE teachers. During his tenure at Chesterfield, he partnered with stakeholders to develop a universally designed community-based recreation program for students with and without disabilities, and shared his findings with his contemporaries as a presenter at the 2023 Shape America Conference.

He received his Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) Certification in 2022, as well as his masters in Adapted Physical Education in 2023 from the University of South Carolina. He has implemented evidence based practices to develop physical education/activity programs to many student populations including those with Autism, Multiple Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Behavior, Hearing and Visual Impairment. 


Vice President: Dr. Melissa Alexander- Montclair State University

Dr. Melissa (Lissa) Alexander is an associate professor at Montclair State University. She serves as the faculty member responsible for teaching the adapted physical education courses at the university and is also the graduate program coordinator for the MAT and Post-BA programs in Health and Physical Education. Graduating with her PhD from Michigan State University, her expertise is in disability sport and adapted physical education. Her areas of interest include teaching students who have autism spectrum disorder, inclusive curriculum development, engaging paraprofessionals in health and physical education, and preparing physical education teachers to meet the unique learning needs of all students. Lissa also has her APENS CAPE certification through NCPEID.


Secretary: Dr. Alex Stribing- Kean University 

Dr. Alexandra Stribing, PhD, is an assistant professor at Kean University in Health and Physical Education. Her service initiatives focus on developing inclusive and empowering programs for youth with disabilities. She is the current director of the Cougars C.L.I.M.B. Adapted Physical Education program and Camp Abilities Field of Dreams. Dr. Stribing’s research efforts concentrate on motor development, physical activity, and health attributes of youth populations (a) with and without disabilities and/or (b) from disadvantaged settings. Specifically, her current research focuses on perceptual influences on actual motor competence in youth with visual impairments. Dr. Stribing has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals such as British Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, Journal of Motor Learning and Development, and Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly.

Member at Large: Melanie Seratelli- Old Bridge Township Schools 

Melanie Seratelli M.ED. CAPE is a Health, Physical Education, and Adapted Physical Education Teacher at Old Bridge Township Public Schools, bringing over 30 years of experience as an educator. She received her Masters in Health and Wellness Education, and in 2016 she received her CAPE certification. 


Member at Large: Dr. Michael Laughlin- Southern Connecticut State University 

Michael Laughlin earned his Ph.D. in Education (emphasis in Adapted Physical Education; APE) from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Since 2002, he has maintained Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) status, using his training to support people with disabilities in K-12 physical education, high school special education, non-profit sector, and higher education settings. Dr. Laughlin's roots run deep in New Jersey. He was William Paterson University's APE specialist faculty member from 2015-2022 in addition to formative years growing up in Bergen County. Now relocated to Southern Connecticut State University, he continues to collaborate with NJ's dedicated physical educators for the purpose of improving school outcomes for children with disabilities
