VC 7

Question: List the Pros, Cons, and Unknowns if Facebook were to seek a way for the Chinese Government to allow its expansion into China. What are the risks if the firm remains out of the country? What do you think the firm should do?

Pros:

-Access to potential customer/consumers

-Expand brand awareness -> Enter a new market

-Opportunities  for additional profit/revenue

Cons:

-Strict international rules [Censorship]

-Competing, already in existence, social media platforms

Unknowns:

-The reaction of people ->Current users and/or potential users

With the BELIEF Guide, first the firm would have to identify the problem that they would be trying to solve by expanding to China. Once clearly stated, there are a variety of concerns that would not pass the "tests" that are given, like the legality test, publicity test and the organization test for example.

With that in mind, I do not believe that the firm should expand at the moment to China. I think that all the work, would not have a payoff, especially since the firm would basically have to re-design and re-brand themselves to a different culture since there are different rules and regulations. Although the idea could potentially be prosperous, I do not think that simply expanding would be a smart move at this point in time. Having the idea of expanding, but expanding to a new country that has a whole new set of rules, would be challenging. This idea should be kept on the "back burner" and develop more research regarding the benefits that the firm would have once expanded. I do not think that the potential benefits would make up for all the work that would have to be done in order to be in compliance with the government, the firm would basically, but not entirely, have to "start over" in order to reach the people of China.
